Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why don't people like hard games anymore?

Hey there.  I come from growing up in the Nes/Snes days and back then alot of game used to be brutally difficult(especially nes).

Back then you had to have some serious skills to beat alot of the games, and some yet to this day are still barely beatable..(ghouls & ghost/silver surfer/mike tysons punch out/super metroid) and those are only a few examples.

Most of todays game it seems have been dumbed down to try and appeal to the more "casual" gamer.  I don't get the same feeling of accomplishment by beating alot of todays games just because they are so damn easy. Of course there is the odd exception like Dark Souls and Tropical Freeze.

Is it just me or do people not enjoy playing hard games like Donkey Kong, Dark Souls and alot of retro stuff?????

Yes, they are being 'downplayed' for the so called casuals. That's why I always start a game on Hard difficult.
Or, we that are gamers for some time can't have a chalenge anymore, since we are playing games since forever :3

I love hard games too, like the Souls franchise of course.

I feel like old games that were difficult (like Super Mario Bros. 3 and Legend of Zelda) mainly because the gamer needed to master the timing or memorized the level and enemy movement .

And consumers seemed to enjoy Flappy Bird for a while before it got deleted.

Tropical Freeze was hard and painful at times but didn't stop being fun for a second. Some levels, when finished with all Kong letters, give a real feeling of accomplishment when beaten. That's the kind of stuff gaming needs.

Part of it was with the influx of casual gamers. All the new gamers would be turned off by challenging games so they were made easier to be accessible to a wider audience, but in doing so require no skill and are easily beaten.

Also with older games, there wasn't much room to make a long games, so they just made them harder to justify your purchase. Gradually it seems games have gotten easier as the amount of content they can fit on the disc/cart increased.

Being hard doesn't necessarily make a good game. I'm more insulted by cut and paste game design and stupid tutorials for really simple actions.

Games don't need to be hard anymore. They extract the money from the player before he plays it so there is no need to extort more money from him by making him lose.

There are still more than enough hard games and even the easiest games have challenging modes. The only thing that changed is that games are more accessible to everyone and come with more difficulty modes than "hard".
I say anyone who says a game isn't challenging is not ready to challenge himself by making it deliberately harder for himself. Why would you need a game to dictate you how to play it?

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

There's room for both. I like hard and easy games equally as long as I enjoy them.
