Forums - Sales Discussion - "The Console Market is Shrinking" is a BS Statement

The console market is

shrinking 98 43.36%

staying the same 52 23.01%

growing 74 32.74%

Total:224

I think it's only a matter of time before consoles leave us. After seeing these new consoles with no innovation made to them (Wii U had innovation, they just didn't go about it the right way IMO) I think it will be for the best. I'm sick of segregated console wars which detract from third parties giving it there all.

I make bad threads.

SSB really went downhill after Melee....

Wii U: 30 million

XBONE: 60 million

PS4: 200 million

That looks like growth to me.

Has nothing to do with that. The 70% of the wii audience will not return to the gaming unless a new fad creates itself. If there is a good product with a good price people will buy it. Analysts knew the Wii  would need a potent successor if the non-gamers were to come back after the Wii's gen.

It has everything to do with that.  The Wii was created to combat both of the problems  mentioned in my post.  Wii was made to combat ever ballooning software production costs and it's controller was made to get new people trying games to combat the lack of market growth.

The Wii is not a fad.  That audience is still gaming.  Just not on the new consoles(sales of Just Dance lead me to believe they are still fine with the Wii). To that audience the new consoles are bad products at bad prices. Their needs are over shot and the games are far too compicated.  The Wii doesn't need a more potent successor to capture that audience and that thinking is why the new consoles never will capture that audience again.

If those customers were wanted(and there are many arguments to make that they are not) then a more accessible, intuitive, and inexpensive successor would have been what was needed to replace the Wii.  It's actual successor was the exact opposite in every quality.

Twas a fad my friend. it had three years years ballooning sales, hit its peak in the fourth and then dropped.

The Wii was an anomaly so the 8th gen was going to be smaller than the 7th gen regardless. Most of the 100 million people who purchased the Wii were never gamers and bought into the motion control hype. Those people were never going to buy another console, so you can't very well factor the Wii into the console market going down.

The PS4 and Xbox One are currently ahead of the PS3 and 360. While the Xbox One seems that it'll drop off sooner, the PS4 is probably going to sell well over 100 million. I think at the end of the gen though, PS4/Xbox One/ and Wii U will either be around or not too far below the console sales of the sixth gen.

That describes a lot more consoles then the Wii.  I guess almost every gaming consoles ever made is a fad then.

That was his point.

Here I was thinking that even he didn't really have one.

Handhelds are consoles too, and we are seeing a dramatic drop in sales there. Replacing the sales of Wii will be all but impossible for this gen for the home consoles.

However, what people care most about on this site is the HD cutting-edge consoles, and all signs show that PS4 should do very well so the market most people care about here should have a chance to hold steady. So the segment of the console market that the hardcore is most interested in should hold steady even if the overall console market (which includes Wii and handhelds) drops dramatically.

I am far more worried about the continuous year-on-year software declines we are seeing each week on this site. This to me is the real danger: with the raising dev costs we need to see MORE sales, not less.

The market is growing faster than ever, but only if you widen your view of gaming = consoles. Mobile (as in phones) is growing by leaps and bounds and in many countries has overtaken dedicated handheld gaming devices.

Think of it this way, the Earth's population is still growing, on the whole people are becoming more affluent with more disposable income (looking at China, India and Eastern Europe), so the overall gaming market will continue to grow. Therefore, even with a decreasing share of the overall gaming market (purely because of the bleed to mobile gaming which I feel will occur the most in Nintendo's former customer base more than the others.), dedicated gaming consoles will continue to at least remain static in market size.

before last gen systems were far more reliable, just think how many people are on their 3rd or 4th ps3/x360. i think within the main markets the amount of gamers is shrinking..

but if you add emerging markets to the mix, i think the potential for WW sales can grow

Well, the ps2 was horribly unreliable. So unreliable that Sony lost a class action lawsuit for it. Disc read error sound familiar? I'm sure some ps fans will proclaim their ps2 as an original, but, so is my 8 year old xbox360, that doesn't mean millions of others didn't experience many failed ps2, or Xbox 360 systems, now does it? No. Even the ps1 had a laser issue, remember people having to flip that thing upside down for it to play? Infact, the ps3 was the first time Sony made a fairly reliable console....

The 8th gen will be down but I still think the people saying the market is shrinking are wrong. I think it should be pretty close or beat the 6th gen. The 7th gen just had an artificial growth tthat would never carry forward thanks to the wii. Now, the Wii U will probably match GC numbers but wont hit N64 numbers... so maybe slight growth over the 6th gen. Ps3+360 will probably end up as much as the Ps2+xbox did and I believe Ps4+XB1 will probably match those numbers with Ps4>Ps3 and XB1
