This comes up again and again. It's mentioned in forums as if it's a fact (happened today!), and it's pissing me off a lot to be honest. Let's deal with the facts shall we:

Generation 3:

NES + Master System + Atari = 61.91 + 11.8 + 3.77 = 77.48 Million

Generation 4:

SNES + Megadrive + TurboGrafx + CDi = 49.1 + 40 + 10 + 0.57 = 99.67 Million

Generation 5

PS + N64 + Saturn + 3DO + Jaguar = 102 + 32.93 + 9.4 + 2 + 0.25 = 146.58 Million

Generation 6

PS2 + Xbox + Gamecube + Dreamcast = 153.6 + 24 + 22 + 10.6 = 209.2 Million

Generation 7

Wii + PS3 + 360 = 100.6 + 81.6 + 80.6 = 262.8 Million (and counting!!!)


So PLEASE tell me where this BS is coming from!?

This gen, the 8th gen, I believe will shrink. So far, the handheld market is shrinking way more than how many people expected. And in the console market, only the PS4 will have great sales. The Xbone will be not bad, but also not good. And the Wii U... Wii U

Except both the PS4 and Xbox One are tracking about 60% ahead of PS3 and X360. So if that continues.. even if the Wii U doesn't do huge.... the PS4/X1 numbers should make up for it.. UNLESS there is a dead drop over the next few years.

Yeah, they are talking about Gen 8, but that's mostly because Nintendo artificially expanded the 7th Gen market and then put out the Wii U which failed completely to pick up were the Wii left. PS4 and X1 are still ahead of their last gen counterparts.

At this point in time it's definitely not unreasonable to expect a contraction.
