Forums - Gaming Discussion - Sega’s failed Dreamcast outsold Nintendo’s Wii U

Except that time frame for 10 mill is over 2 years???? Wii u has plenty of time to catch that figure. Also dreamcast didnt fail, sega failed, who knows how many it would of sold if sega had the money to finance it for longer. Nintendo are loaded. Nice try on the doom thread please try harder

The numbers here are wrong. It took the Dreamcast three years, from November 1998 until at least November 2001, when Dreamcast consoles were still on store shelves despite being discontinued. This article is making the strange assumption that every system was sold between November 1999 (Dreamcast launched in September and October 1999 in US and Europe) and when the system was officially discontinued in March of 2001, whch simply isn't what happened.

IIRC the Dreamcast did very well in the US, Sega just wasn't stable enough financially to continue in the hardware business.

Yeah, because M$ and EA killed them... -_-

Sega 32x = Few games, poor market timing and divided the market.

Saturn = At 1994 E3 they said, we will not release saturn next year. We will release it one week later. Third party developers are in shock.

Dreamcast = Launched too early and had a bad reputation for previous systems poor support.

I dont like EA. But for dreamcast sega's mistakes drove EA from them.

Really, what killed the 32x was the Saturn. The system did very well initially, but it just didn't have a future given that Saturn was launching the following year.

SEGA said this at E3 1995. Originally, the Saturn was to launch in September on "Saturnday", but it was revealed to be a ruse and SEGA revealed that the Saturn would be available imminently at select retailers. Though this did irritate third parties, it most famously provoked several retailers who were left out of the launch, in particular KB Toys, whom refused to carry SEGA products afterwards.

What killed third party support was the Saturn's very difficult to program hardware and poor sales. What killed EA's support for the Dreamcast was SEGA not giving EA a heads up regarding the discontinuation of the Saturn and the launch of the Dreamcast. EA actually offered to support the Dreamcast on the condition that EA sports become the only game in town when it comes to sports games on the system (or it may have just been football games, don't quite remember). In response SEGA launched the 2K sports series.

EA didn't support the Dreamcast because they demanded to be the only developer of sports games on the system and Sega didn't accept.

Why are people unhappy with the thread? It's facts being discussed not opinions. Do you people disagree with facts now?

it not facts because Dreamcast sold 10mil after more than 2 years. Wii U still have 1 year and half.

I'm not saying Wii U is selling good, but let's talk real facts

I ignored the dreamcast at the time like many others. I'd taken in the Sony hype and was waiting for the ps2. Then after the discontinued news came out the dreamcasts went really cheap as did the games. I think I paid £39.99 for a dreamcast and there were offers for games as low as 5 for £10. I bought many bundles of games.

I realised the console was absolutely amazing and Sega had invested huge amounts in developing brilliant software like Shenmue. I was never a fan of the Master system, Megadrive, 32X, Mega CD or Saturn although I do still have a Saturn but the Dreamcast was utterly brilliant. It took a long time for the PS2 to get a similar number of brilliant games, perhaps 3 years into its life and that was with a huge amount of support from publishers thanks to its huge success. Sega achieved wonders with the Dreamcast.

So even though a failed console commercially those who bought it experienced some of the best gaming of its day. It's a guilty feeling to have enjoyed so many great games at such a minimal price.

OP; ask yourself why this thread exists. The same one has been made several times over, in some shape or form. It has huge potential for conflicts and trouble, we're keeping our eye on it and it won't need a very big push to get locked, so everyone try to keep it civil.

I hope WiiU will not die.
