but then again the real issue here is not to be number one in market share it is to make sure you stay close enough while still generating profit.... being first is useless if you lose money... or make less money than when you were second...

That ignores the reason why fan boys are arguing over this, they are arguing over it because being #1 matters to their egos for some bizarre reason.

yes, but at least have to wait till M$ nearly earn back the investment cost they spent on it... although it sound sorry for people who supporting it...

I don't think Kinect alone can really get them a significant cost/price advantage...
Maybe XBone has a SMALL cost advantage vs. PS4 with Kinect removed, probably $25 at most.
But PS4 has demonstrated 2:1 advantage in demand, which can be leveraged for higher volume discount w/ suppliers.
Removing Kinect would just be ONE PART of a MS price war strategy, they would still need to throw more money down the pit hoping it works.

Removing Kinect may EQUALIZE the costs, but I think any further investment would be better spent on exclusive development/purchases...
INCLUDING for Kinect... if there really is any game concepts that make good use of it, then MS should be showcasing that.
Not games where you can turn Kinect off and still play the same basic game, but where it is central to the experience.
I don't know if those really exist for AAA games, but hey, I'm not closing the door to that happening, if MS can step thru that door and deliver the goods.

But currently I don't think including Kinect is helping MS sales, so removing it at least lets them re-allocate investment that now goes into materials,
and send that into game development, which is a better usage if Kinect isn't leading to higher profit margin per console currently...
If they are happy with that profit margin, they would do better by putting it into games which could increase console sales AND/OR 1st party game attachment rate.

So March NPD results are in, even with the massively hyped Titanfall, a $50 pricedrop, and a free game bundled, XBO still couldn't turn the tides in the US. In fact it wasn't even close with a 60k difference between the two. A lot of people have been suggesting that Microsoft offer a Kinect-less SKU at a cheaper price. It seems smart, especially since Kinect games like Fighter Within and Kinect Sports Rivals aren't reviewing too well, but it may not be that simple. MS announced that the XBO had shipped 5m units, according to VGC it's only sold 4.2m units. If MS does offer a Kinect-less SKU then that means there will be about 800k unsold Kinects sitting around. Who knows how many more they've got manufactored? My question is, does it make financial sense to get rid of Kinect now? Or should Microsoft keep Kinect and just make a price drop for the whole thing?

I think that ditching Kinect now would be a bad move as it would be yet another 180 on their "vision" for the X1 which would only further damage thier image, as well as ditch all thoes developers that they promised that every Xbox One would come with Kinect.

Also it would be a direct slap in the face to all the early adopters who bought Xbox One despite the fact that they did not want Kinect.

I think what they need to do is wait until E3 2015 to anounce a Xbox One slim, and with that, quietly sneak in that there will be an "arcade version" that comes without a kinect for ~50$ cheaper than the standard version.

So in short, yes, drop it, but not yet.

Ditching Kinect NOW would be a bad move because they undoubtedly contracted for at least a year's worth of production because otherwise the fixed costs of production for a unique product are ridiculously high to spread over a tiny production run, so even if they already decided to ditch it in order to reach a lower price point, they may as well include all the Kinects they have already contracted their suppliers to produce, the most they could save might be freight costs.

6 months in? No. Although they need to get some games rolling out for it. Drop the price to $400 and ride this out. The sales are not bad at all. The generation will be long. Don't play the short game.

6 months in? Yes.

there doing what they have to do. if what they saw when they did everything around titanfall did work this is there next opition

I will buy an X1 at some point now they have removed the manditory Kinect. So a good move in my opinion as im sure im not the only person who didnt want Kinect forced upon them.

yes. Unlike the gamepad in WiiU, XBone can easily lose kinect and still function 100%. Sure you lose the voice features and/or camera features but that is not an issue for the userbase.

The cost being $100 less and equal to PS4 is a much larger benefit that will result in higher sales.
