Forums - Sales Discussion - A nice article with STEAM game sales estimations

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2014/04/introducing-steam-gauge-ars-reveals-steams-most-popular-games/

I was amazed to see that almost 37% of games bought on STEAM was NEVER played by its new owners... )))

I'm not terribly surprised by that figure, steam generates a lot of impulse buys with their seasonal sales, bundle sales where people wind up picking up extra games they never intend to play in the first place and what not. I have at least a dozen (probably way, way more than that) games in my library I haven't touched yet and have no idea when I'll get to them.

>_> ... I probably haven't played 95%... damn you humble bundles..

Face the future.. Gamecenter ID: nikkom_nl (oh no he didn't!!)

I haven't played most. I've bought them in anticipation of getting a rig that can do them justice and run at 1080/60

RIP Dad 25/11/51 - 13/12/13. You will be missed but never forgotten.

So 37% of the customers money wasted on something they never intended to play/purchase just because of steam sales trick.

GAMING is not about spending hours to pass/waste our time just for fun,

its a Feeling/Experience about a VIRTUAL WORLD we can never be in real, and realizing some of our dreams (also creating new ones).

So, Feel Emotions, Experience Adventure/Action, Challenge Game, Solve puzzles and Have fun.

PlayStation is about all-round "New experiences" using new IP's to provide great diversity for everyone.

Xbox is always about Online and Shooting.

Nintendo is always about Fun games and milking IP's.

apparently gameplay time wasn't tracked prior to 2009 so that might make that percentage higher.

Also someone in the comments mentioned something about offline mode not being tracked either? Just some variables for the numbers.

Not necessarily: I for one have 78 games on steam; of those,
-I never played 34 games according to Steam
-only 34 games have a listed played time of more than 1 hour

But,
-I got ~25 of the games I never played through bundles and never intended to play them anyway (I wouldn't count that as a trick)
-I already owned 3 games through other means than Steam, but wanted to have an backup-option once the discs stop working
-3 of the games that are listed as "never played" I did actually play, but before 2009 when Steam started tracking the played time
-2 of the never played games are still on my "to play"-list and will be played once my new GPU arrives in a few days
-around 5 of the games I played less than 1 hour will be played again once the new GPU arrives

edit: fixed some typos

I have 195 games on Steam with playtime in only 49 so I haven't played 74,9% of my games. :S

I guess my gf, study and consoles take up most of my time.. and that I buy too many Humble Bundles just for the charity (what a saint I am).

My rate is probably much worse. I have surely more games I never played on Steam as I have games I've played.

Would be nice to know where Football Manager 2014 stands in total owned numbers. I mean, It reaches 60k players at the same time on a daily basis and on weekends probably much more so that it has to have huge sales numbers and it isn't even available in Germany which would push the numbers even more.
