7th gen Nintendo games like Mario Galaxy 1 & 2, Metroid Prime 3, Donkey Kong Country Returns, and Xenoblade were technically strong for their hardware, more so than any of their Wii U efforts to date.

Oh without a doubt they were, but i was talking of how many Nintendo fans believed a game like SMG had visuals as good (as a whole package, both graphically and aesthetically) as a PS3 game like Killzone. I agreed with that opinion, as games like Killzone may show off great graphics, but they have the art direction of a depressed rock :p Shadow Fall was a move in the right direction, but that was merely an upgrade from depressing rock to relatively interest bush.

You'd think people would appreciate how much respect i have for Nintendo artistic skill rather than jump down my throat for being dissatisfied with their technical efforts :/

As a Nintendo fan, I too am disappointed with their lack of technical ambition, because the console sorely needs someone to show what it can do.

For instance, Retro Studios pushed the GC and Wii hard, then their first Wii U game is stiflingly conservative on the technical front. Don't get me wrong, Tropical Freeze is an absolutely amazing game, and it looks very nice, but it doesn't suggest even an inclination for exploring the limits of the hardware.

Yeah i was disappointed by Retro not pushing things too (excluding dat sweet sweet fur :p). Still, we have several years to go before this gen is over. Hopefully by the end of it the WiiU will have a title people can look back on as the one that really showed what it could do (like Halo for the 360 and TLOU/Uncharted for the PS3).

Not sure why simply using CE3 is impressive, even the PS3 and 360 were compatible with it :P

Still, it's a nice looking game. Perhaps not quite the jump i was expecting after a year and a half on the market, but with Nintendo's lack of graphical ambition we have to settle with the ambition of 3rd/2nd parties. Definitely going to keep an eye on this ^^ Haven't bought a Sonic game in year.

Lack of graphical ambition..? Super Mario 3D World, Mario Kart 8, X and SSBU all say different. And so will Zelda U when we see it.

I think you are confusing graphics with aesthetics. Nintendo's game looks great, but that can almost entirely be credited to their artistic skill, not their graphical ambition. Graphics are the technical side of a game, it's texture, filtering, AA, shading etc. In that respect Nintendo have been incredibly underwhelming

To use your example of 3D world, it's using basic flat textures, surprisingly low polygon characters and environments, and is has basic edge detection AA (which is almost embarrassing when compared to the SMAA T2X variant used for infamous).

Again, their games do look great, but that certainly isn't due to pushing the technical side of things :P Which, like i said, is a shame. They certainly put more effort into maxing the hardware of their previous consoles.

Super Mario 3D World is technically impressive. The character models are high poly, as are the enemy models. There are also plenty of large models with perfectly round surfaces. And if that wasn't enough then take into consideration the fact that it's 720p native and 60fps with v-synch enabled and that when playing local multiplayer there are a shitload of player characters on screen and it hardly drops a frame.

Nintendo's first party titles do indeed have great art, but that's only part of the story of why Super Mario 3D World looks so good.

Of the games announced so far, I have my eye on Monolith Soft's X, FAST Racing Neo, and Art of Balance. Others like Mario Kart 8, Bayonetta 2, Project CARS, and Yarn Yoshi will likely also look good, but on a more technically modest level.

I'm curious, what the hell is Art of Balance? o.O I've seen it mentioned numerous times, and seen some screens, but i really don't get what it's about :P

It's a puzzle game where you have to stack differently shaped blocks without them tipping over, basically.

Mario Kart 8 looks a lot better than X, which is normal considering X is an open world game which is more demanding than a racing game.

But X looks like it will push the system harder.

mario kart 8 and bayonetta 2 are certainly not on the modest level. we have yet to see the others but i don't thing project cars and yoshi will be modest either.

Mmmmkay... So is this game going to be another Lost Worlds , where people praise it, claim it'll be a blow to the next gen consoles, but then don't even buy it after it gets a. 60- something on Metacritic?
