Why can't you just use Wiimote+Nunchuck, the Pro Controller, or the Gamepad? The latter-most option is the best option anyway!

I have a gamepad, 4 wiimotes and 1 nunchuck, and don't plan to buy anymore nunchucks or pro controllers.  As well, I would only play this game with my friends and kids and we all dislike playing using motion controlling and the wiimote+nunchuck combo.  So whoever has the gamepad would have the upperhand.  I can't see why Nintendo would be so stupid and not have the option of just using the D-pad for just the wiimote rather than using motion to steer.

Side note: Im left handed so I hate wii games that requires the wiimote+nunchuck combo where I need to use my right hand to point accurately at things. (I have to switch and put the wiimote on my left hand every time lol)

Do you also plan to never buy another game system ever cause you'd have to buy controllers for it lol? I mean really, they have made almost every controller option useable. If you don't want to use or buy the necessary controllers so that you can have access to multiplayer on your console, then that's entirely on you!

You can also play against people online with your GamePad. Most multiplayer games in the past five years lack split screen support anyway. Nintendo games are the rare exception that usually have four player support. So if you're used to playing multiplayer games online than this shouldn't be too big of a deal for you anyway.

Sucks for your family and friends that come over though. Maybe you should tell them to buy their own Pro/ classic controller if they want to play Mario Kart 8 with you since you bothered to buy the system and game already. Or better yet, tell them to buy their own system and game so you can play them online like people do with FPS games

I think a gamepad, 4 wiimotes, and a nunchuck is more than enough (i also have the original wii pro controller). Is it so hard to just make an option to play it with the D-pad like the old schoolway? Nintendo did it with NSMB and DKCR so I cant see why they cant with MK.

My wii U is mainly just for local partying, and my fam and friends i play with rarely play enough games to justify them purchasing a controller just for one game (MK).

It seems like you are excited for Mario Kart 8 but also feel really upset about its local player options.

Do you enjoy playing mutliplayer games online? Because Mario Kart Wii had one of the better online functions for the Wii. I'm sure Mario Kart 8 will be even better because recent online Nintendo games are pretty awesome. Sure it sucks that you can't play this game locally, but maybe you can treat Mario Kart 8 as an online multiplayer game because you seem to enjoy its multiplayer a lot. That's how most FPS gamers treat their FPS games when they have no one else to play with so why not do the same with Mario Kart 8?

And I bet Mario Kart 8's Grand Prix mode will be as fun as the other Mario Karts as well

There is no reason to not buy this game if you enjoy how its looks so far. Unless you're really that upset about losing your ability to play this game locally with your friends.

Oh, and this! Hell if I ever play Mario Kart locally! Maybe like once or twice a year lol. It's all about the online!

That's what somebody said to me about Mario Kart for the Wii so I ended up buying a copy; but in the end it just wasn't for me and my friends so we ended up playing MK for the SNES, N64 and GC instead.  I'm sure MK8 will be a fantastic game like every other MK but it's not likely my friends and I can enjoy it with the same controls as the Wii version when playing 4 player local.  Do let me know if Nintendo does have a D-pad option for the Wiimote and thanks for your input =)

I was never big on MK for the single player and online mode,  it's just mainly for the local fun which is why I love Nintendo games that can never be replaced.
