there is a massive difference between building a scaled back engine and cutting every perceivable corner to ensure a game hits a target resolution and framerate, and taking a project with a wider scope and trying to make it work, its like trying to force the square block in to a round hole.

So, to throw that shit back at you, since you either cant understand it, or do but simply dont want to accept it.

So you're saying the ps4 is less powerful than ps3?
Ridge racer 7 ran solid 1080p60 without a hitch. Wipeout HD did some resolution scaling but stayed very close to 1080p60. Surely the ps4 can maintain 1080p60 as well with less demanding visuals.  Resogun is 1080p60. WiiU is producing 1080p60 games. As long as devs prioritize visuals, solid 60fps won't be the norm.

Right then, are we to just assume that because a small handful of games can run at 1080p60, ALL games can?

It's all about priorities. That incredibly detailed target render or 60fps.

Now think about this, for just a minute...   ive been saying, next gen will focus on 1080p/60, we wont see anything higher for almost all games - with extra power but sticking to 1080p, they get to push the graphics harder and maintain the 60fps, on a resolution that will work on the widest range of displays.

If you ever had aspirations of being a games developer, please, do not give up that day job.

I simply don't accept it. I've been a software developer for 15 years and dealt with the pressure from the board and marketing department for more useless features to add on the box, at the detriment of the performance of the core program. Responsiveness, framerate, if it's still acceptable, then throw in another bunch of threads with background tasks that take away memory and cpu cycles. Actually they didn't care if it was still acceptable, that was up to us to get it to work. At least (new) games suffer less from their programs getting bigger, more bloated and slower year over year. I imagine they still do though with code / engine re-use.

I don't believe games will stick to 1080p next gen. Just like the order now, I wouldn't be surprised to see more 2.35:1 games next gen at 2560x1600, horizontally scaled. Even if games stick to 1080p, framerate will still be the first thing to give when it comes to more expensive render techniques and effects. There could ofcourse be an option like last gen that you can set output to 1080p (720p last gen) which will change the render pipeline, eg GT5.

It's a choice. The backlash for it not looking 'next-gen' enough is greater than it not reaching 60fps. It will be the same next-gen. Show up your competitor with a game that looks great in 4K > look we can do 1080p60 now.

right then, lets just agree to disagree, and in 10 years time one of us will get to say i told you so.

Around the Network

PS3 and 360 have 1080/60fps games.
It's just a question of priority; are you willing to cut back on effects, materials, etc to achieve that framerate and resolution?
