Forums - Gaming Discussion - How to build a good Pokemon team?

Time for a second batch of questions, this time regarding EVs. As far as I understand, Pokemons learn EVs while travelling. Each stat has an associated EV. The EV has a total max and a max per stat. 4 EVs increase the stat about 1 at level 100 (and relative to that on lower levels).
EVs are increased in three ways: Battling wild Pokemon (each Pokemon has a fixed number of EVs and a fixed stat for the EV associated with it), feeding Vitamins or in X/Y Supertraining.
Question 1: Is that right so far?
Question 2: Is there a way to determine the current EVs of a Pokemon?

Super Training seems the easiest way without doing it wrong. After the initial stuf you have 6 trainings, for each of the stats one. After I go through a training, it says 'stat +4'.
Question 3: I assume that means the stat in question gained 4 EVs, is that right?

So I could sit down, make supertrainings with a freshly catched or breeded Pokemon and could get the real EV-number if I note each training.

Question 4: But without Super Training the Pokemon hits punching bags. Does that influence the EVs in any way? And what change the selection of a punching bag?
Question 5: Could I train a level 1 Pokemon with Super Training to max out it's EV and then level it by fighting wild Pokemon without bothering about the fights will change the EV anymore?
Questions 6: If it evolves, will the Pokemon keep the EVs?

Pokemon is way more complex than that. No one wins Pokemon with brute strength alone. Sweepers are usually really easy to take out without back up, and a whole team of them is borderline suicide.

Honestly, you can't just ignore a Pokemon's base stats, even in the begining. You may be forgiven for ignoring EV's, IV's and maybe even Natures, but Pokemon isn't a game where you can just "win with your favorites." Flareon has an amazing attack stat, but is a shitty Pokemon. Meganium has pretty solid defenses, but it's a shitty Pokemon. Bastiodon, a steel type, has amazing defensive stats, but you'd be laughed at for using one, because it's shit.

When looking for a Pokemon to fill a roll you need, it's not as simple as thinking "I need this type for my wall and this one for my sweeper." Porygon 2 is an exellect wall/tank, but it's a Normal type, and it's defensive stats are only slightly above average.

I like I said, start by copying other teams and learning how they work. You don't learn to compose by writing your own music. You do so by reading other people's music.

Hmm, a lot of work, and I just don't weant to be a punching bag online. *sigh*

You can play to the tiers if you want to focus on specific Pokemon who might not be the best. There are competitions that focus on taking the "bad" Pokemon and still fighting with them. Though that does not go for general play.

6 is a definite yes. 5 is probably yes.

Question 1: Is that right so far?

Yes.  Remember Power items and Pokerus can increase EV gains (not in Super Training tho).

Also look up Horde EV training.  It's really nice after post game, tho Super Training is still used for exact spreads.

I mainly use Horde EV training for 252 / 252 / 6 builds.

Question 2: Is there a way to determine the current EVs of a Pokemon?

The graph on the super training page gives you a general idea.

To be 100% sure, save, then use a reset bag, it will briefly tell your exact EV's, then reset the game.

Question 3: I assume that means the stat in question gained 4 EVs, is that right?

Yep. Level 1 = 4, 2 = 8, 3 = 12.

Question 4: But without Super Training the Pokemon hits punching bags. Does that influence the EVs in any way? And what change the selection of a punching bag?

Hitting the punching bag, when nothing is on it, will randomly give you bags.

Placing a bag then hitting it will activate an effect.

S = 1 EV, M = 4 EV, L =12 EV.

There are various other bags but besides reset and 2x bags, the rest are meh.

Question 5: Could I train a level 1 Pokemon with Super Training to max out it's EV and then level it by fighting wild Pokemon without bothering about the fights will change the EV anymore?

Yep.

Questions 6: If it evolves, will the Pokemon keep the EVs?

Yep.

Ah, that's good. So I can train with Super training without fearing to make too much errors.

Some more questions:

1. A newly catched or breeded Pokemon has no EVs so far, is that right?
2. In the friend safari the Pokemon have two perfect IVs (randomly), is that right?
3. How can I learn, which IVs has a Pokemon?

2 - Yes. to all. This is the damage formula (quite pretty!) (found in this Bulbapedia page, more info there):

Of course there are plenty of modifiers:

Thanks. I added that to the OP. That brings up the question of Accuracy, but it is easy answered: http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Accuracy

Basically the value in the attack-description is the percentage, no stat is involved, only moves that change the abilities and items. So does it make sense to use an attack with high damage but low accuracy and hold an accuracy increasing item?

Yes, the number in the attack-description is the base value.

On moves:

Do not use acc-boosting items, they're rather bad. Choice items, Life Orb, Black Sludge, Leftovers, Eviolite and a few others are better.

Example: Thunder + Wide Lens: 70/100 base accuracy + 70*(10/100)= 77% accuracy, 120 power. Wasting a held item for an extra 7% is't worth it.

Damaging moves with 85%-90%+ accuracy are reliable without any boost, but don't use something like Thunder or Dynamicpunch without boosting its accuracy to respectable levels.

Keep in mind that the Special Attack and Special Defense stats replace Attack and Defense in the damage formula respectively for special attacks. So Gyarados sucks with Surf but is awesome with Waterfall.

Do not use two-turn, self-stat-decreasing, self-damaging or even self-locking moves unless you know what you're doing (for example, there isn't much wrong in using Outrage with Haxorus after a Swords Dance).

And it's about to get worse, we haven't said anything about priority moves!

1 + 2 are correct.

For three after you defeat the Elite Four you can go to Kiloude City.  There in the Poke centre is a judge who will vaguely tell you.

http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Stats_judge

You basically want him to tell you several stats can't be beat.  To save time once you hatch a few pokemon look at their characteristics in the stats screen.

http://www.serebii.net/games/characteristics.shtml

If you don't see the phrase that denotes a 31 IV PC it and hatch another.

At the very least, sometimes you might find a 3 IV.

3. How can I learn, which IVs has a Pokemon?

There's a IV checker in the Pokemon Center in the same city as the Friend Safari.

He will only comment on thier highest IV (will state multiple stats if 31), but will also mention if they its 0 IV as well.

"Stats like those... They simply can't be beat! That's how I judge it." = 31 IV

http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Stats_judge (scroll down to Gen VI to see exact quotes)

You can also you this to see exact IV's but takes a bit of number input.

Ah, thanks. So it might be a good start to get Pokemon from friend safari and playing around, with these the team should be better without the need for breeding. If I catch the desired Pokemon multiple time, I should be able to get an OK nature and OK stats, am I right?
