Forums - Sports Discussion - How come the NHL is'nt more popular in America.

I'm just wondering why the NHL is'nt more popular in America. I"m personally not a fan,but I respect the sport. I could never play hockey on skates. that takes alot of talent and skill in my mind. I'd probably fall every 30 seconds. Espn always seems to talk about the NHL in passing and they never really show any of there games. It's always football and basketball %99 of the time. It's like it's the step-child of sports in america. Baseball evens seems to be talked about more then hockey. I'm surprised the NHL is still around, because how do they make there money if nobody seems to watch it. Maybe it stays around because it's popular in other places. Don't really know the answer man!!!!!

Hockey is much more popular in the Northern States as opposed to the Southern. All just depends on where you are I guess. Winning teams tend to develop a good market, Los Angeles was able to, Boston has a huge hockey market, places like Detroit, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia etc. The whole State of Minnesota is big on hockey, just as all of Canada is. There are a ton of struggling markets too, though, Phoenix comes to mind right away, I believe New Jersey has been on a decline, Florida etc.

Baseball is America's national sport though. It's not that people don't like hockey, it's more that people are generally more interested in Baseball, Football and Basketball.

Its popular enough.

Makes more $ from Canadien tv then US.

Nhl tards are to stupid to send more teams up north, rather lose 50 mill a year in the desert then create over night the second most profitable franchise by adding a second team to Toronto,

Hockey just isn't that accessible to play or spectate compared to other sports. It's extremely expensive and time consuming for kids to get into, and a lot of people that haven't grown up watching it and playing it have a hard time following the puck on TV because it's so small and moves around so fast.

Having said that, I absolutely love hockey. There's nothing that compares to watching the NHL playoffs!

Love it here in aus play it on ps3 clocked over with my brother in gm connected into our seventh season can watch every game via my nhl gamecentre app.. I do wish it was more popular over here tho, bit hars i guess with not much in the way of natural snow/ice

Hey man. Im in the same boat, an nhl loving aussie. Im just glad the internet was invented otherwise we would be pretty screwed here when it comes to televised games. By the way.... Go Flyers!!! Haha

That's pretty accurate. Plus, I would add that hockey is not as fun to watch on TV due to the high pace and small puck which makes it nearly impossible to tell what's going on. Because it's not good to watch on TV, there's a way smaller audience watching the sport leading to less people willing to try itout.

Personally I can't get into watching Ice hockey, because the puck moves too quickly for me to see what's happening (especially if I watch from a comfortable position on my couch). Playing Ice hockey video games is quite fun though.

In the southern United States, most people have never even seen Hockey, much less played it. High Schools won't have it as a sport, unlike the other Big Three, which kills exposure. It's not like it's a sport where you can just get together with your friends for a few games on the weekend.

Personally, I like watching Hockey but most of my friends wouldn't know if they stopped playing tomorrow.
