Forums - Sales Discussion - Prediction: Wii U will put up a fight against the XBO

Nah, X1 already has 2nd place on a weekly basis. It is just a matter of time before that is actualized in an all time 2nd place.

Wii U is not really fighting with PS4/X1.  Wii U is fighting with the PS3, don't you agree?

You have a very good argument but I don't expect Microsoft to be passive this gen. They will fight and claw their way to 2nd place.

I predict that the Wii U will sell a total of 18 million units in its lifetime.

The NX will be a 900p machine

Yes but in the bigger picture they are behind wii u worldwide by 1.9 million consoles and are averaging only 50,000 more consoles weekly   sold worldwide at the moment .even if it continues to sell at that pace do you know how long it will take to catch up with no major system selling game coming out anytime soon "actualized"...when mario kart releases next month wii u should either match or sell more wii u's on a weekly basis ..so It is not a given that xbox one will catch wii u anytime in the near future ....people lie numbers don't lol just saying

Hopefully this turns out to be true but also dont forget alot off gamers eventually get all 3 consoles as prices drop! For me though i aint getting xone at all this gen just going wii u/ps4

I think it all depends on 3 things: E3, Mario Kart, and what Nintendo releases between MK8 and Smash Bros.

Who 'wins' or 'loses' at E3 will determine perception of the 3 consoles. If Sony splutters, then Microsoft may well become the choice primary console for the rest of the year. Conversely, if Sony impresses and Nintendo plays some of its aces (eg. new Zelda AND Metroid being shown off), then Microsoft could be left in the dust.

In all probability, I think all 3 will have outstanding E3s, but that Sony might just lose out of complacency.

What Mario Kart does to the baseline sales is the other major factor. I am predicting it will do big things to the baseline, at the very least closing the gap with Xbox One over the summer period.

And depending on when the secondary Nintendo titles land (ie. Bayonetta 2, Sonic Boom, Hyrule Warriors, Yarn Yoshi etc.) that baseline MIGHT remain comparable if the momentum is kept up until the holidays.

The X1 won't fair well this holiday period IMO. Or at least, not as well as the Wii U and PS4 (Wii U has families, PS4 the hype). Essentially whether or not the XBone passes the Wii U (before it's successor lands) comes down to how Sony and Nintendo do; rather than what Microsoft does.

Gamecube had a Mario Kart game and Smash bros game and it ended underneath the first Xbox. Now Xbox is a much more popular brand and it has 3rd party support + some exclusives like Halo and Gears of war.

Without 3rd party support Wii U can do nothing ;)

That's true, and I've said several times before I think X1 will be neck in neck with Wii U around December.

However a close fight would mean XB1 have similar trajectory, which we know isn't the case in the numbers.

No. Wii U is fighting for:

A) The Nintendo fans from the N64 / GC eras. (Since Wii U is tracking below both of them currently)

B) Any casuals they can get back from the Wii.

C) Core gamers looking for a secondary system.

I don't think many considering a PS3 or XB360 is thinking Wii U.

uergh, it messed up, damn less than signs, and no edit at work. Could a mod please delete my previous post?

To everyone pointing to Xbox vs Gamecube, remember that ultimately the Xbox only beat GC by less than 3 million. Hardly a conclusive win.

I think this gen will be similarly close between the 2 of them, with less than 5 million separating them (either way), by the time Nintendo releases the Wii U's successor in 2017.
