Forums - Sales Discussion - Why do people act like MK & SSB is all the Wii U has?

Gees, people have to stop saying it's marketing and teething problems, we're 18 months in, that is beyond long enough for a product to get noticed.

I agree. It should be long enough for a product to get noticed. Sadly, it isn't in this case because Nintendo has been absolutely horrible at marketing it.

what more marketing could they do? there are commercials, ads what more? Lower the price, they could do that but they are already not making money on the system they would start losing money if they lower the price. Im going under the assmption that they will not add more marketing or lower the price, so i dont see why it would get an uptick outside of Mario kart and holidays

They could see it in Gamestop, Best Buy, Target, Walmart, etc. those arent some small chain stores they are huge. So yes i do think most people at least have seen one, but they simply dont care, its the opposite effect of Wii. Price isnt a problem of not caring. If they cared and it was too expensive they would wait for price drops, that didnt really increase WIi U fortunes when they did one, so i can only conclude price is not an issue its the product. PS4 xone support this as they are much more expensive and are doing much better. So it cant be the price unless even the Ninty faithful dont think Ninty systems are above a certain value.

The Wii U hasn't had a price drop yet. I don't know why people think this. The 32GB version replaced the basic version and that's it. It's always been $300 since launch. (Official retail price)

As for marketing, I saw a few commercials when Lego City came out over a year ago and a few during Holiday 2013 (for 3D World) and that's it. It's been about 10% of the marketing for the PS4 & XBO and then just released 6 months ago.

As for stores? Do you really believe that the average consumer randomly walks into Walmart, goes to the game section, and says "Hey let's buy this new $300 Nintendo system". I think not. Most of us, know what we plan to buy before going to a store. Plus, if they shop online, unless they decide to search "Wii" they will never know.

Anyway, I just wanted to see why everyone acts like Nintendo will sit on their hands and release only 2 games for the rest of the year and call it a day.

It's clear we have different views and now seem to just be trying to convince each other to think another way. I've enjoyed this discussion and see you guys do make some good points. Look forward to conversation in the future, but I think this is it for this thread :)

I think it's because those two games have proven in the past to be Nintendo's biggest system sellers.

Exactly, despite wiiu's dry future! Hopefully nintendo are going to pull some guns out for E3 and hve some releases planned out for 2nd half of 2014.

They did do this before in the past (big games announced with 3-6 months later releases)

What so you think they can announce that will sell systems?

Surely they have/had all bases covered. Smash, 2D Mario, 3D Mario, Mario Kart and Donkey Kong along with several Wii titles released/releasing.

It's like saying. Well Halo, Gears, Forza, Fable & Titanfall haven't worked selling XB1 but Alan Wake 2 will do the trick?

Well.... The best system sellers are definitely MK+SSB and they are in their own league imo. (Same with Halo for microsoft) Zelda+Metroid look to be the best after those 2 cuz of LoZ fanbase which is pretty big and metroid for dem hardcore fans. Its a shooter/platformer but much different than the similar NSMB/SM3D/DK/etc.

I think there is one thing ONLY if done right cuz we never seen before but maybe that rumored NFC project or Miyamoto's New IP. Really depends on wat it is (lets not go there with pokemon rumble cuz that was garbage). FZero/Star Fox would be interesting to see cuz they are something we havent had in the longest (similar to luigi's mansion 2 success)

All the games that aren't mk8 or ssb are basically buffering games in between releases

The past two generations has had a dominating console and then two fighting for 2nd place. The general consensus (based on early numbers) is that the PS4 will be that system this gen. If this is true, while the multi-platform games will surely help the XBO, they won't help as much as they helped the XB360. most people who want those games will pick the PS4.

If this is true, aren't the multi-platform games also "buffering games" between the big releases for the XBO?

Just wondering why people count every little thing XBO gets as a pro but for the Wii U, unless it's of MK or Smash magnitude, it doesn't count.

Because that's all Wii U is going to get.  The Big Third Party Companies aren't bringing their games to Wii U because it's just not powerful enough for them.  For one example Batman Arkham Knight is coming to PS4 and Xbox One and Batman is as big of a property as anyone has Nintendo included, but it's not coming to Wii U.

the 32gig was 350, its 300 now. How is that NOT a price cut? doesnt matter if the crappy sku was 300 before, its not even around anymore.

Ill give you that. its not marketed as much as PS4 or xone, but its not that bad. I see commercials and ads, but IMHO it still wont help much. Vita has even worse advertisment and its been doing better weekly than WIi U on average.

Thats not the point I was making. I never said they were going to just pick it up on a whim. You say no one knows about it. I say you are wrong because they are in stores, huge chains. But that goes back to my initial point they see it and they just dont care. So its not that they dont know WIi U exists it just does nothing for them.

No one is saying that Ninty is only releasing two games. WHat people are saying is that thsoe are the only two games that matter in actually moving significant HW. You think they are going to announce anything at E3 the level of Kart or Smash? doubt it.

I hope they lay the wood as well. I'm pulling for the big N.

Mario kart was the king Mario game on the Wii thats why. It tends to be high on the list of top sellers in every gen for mario. Super Smash wont do as well. There are other games but if Mario Kart and Super Smash don't sell well its pretty much over.

you're not answering the thread's question.

My answer is that there wont be a game until Nintendo tries something new. If the usual suspects cant save it then it the new gamer (god forbid) will truly have to be a great exclusive and not multiplat. There are no other games of note including Zelda and the Wii gimmick no longer works. The Wii U is going to probably do worse than GC numbers the way things are going. This generation the Wii U will be cannibalized by the Wii U and having ported games on both platforms isnt helping. The DS version will still feature multiplayer and will still be cheaper in the end. The Wii U loses by default there. I believe this is why MS pushed back the 360 release date of Titanfall, because it would cannibalize the Xbox Ones chances of regaining marketshare at launch against the PS4.

you said so much random stuff thet i didn't get half of it. and you still haven't answered the thread's question.

Sorry, I was typing on my phone because I was in sequentials class. I was saying there will be no other games at E3. This is exactly why I believe Nintendo is doing the Nintendo Directs, because without third party they cannot outshine Sony and Microsoft at E3. 90% of the hottest games that come out at E3 are third party and the rest are exclusive to some platform and even there Sony and Microsoft will give each other a run for their money. I would be extremely surprised to see Nintendo get back on the stage this year with Mario kart and Super Smash headlining their year. As i said before, poor Wii U because the 3DS is the primary Nintendo console for sure this gen without any competition from its parent console. Many more people will buy 3DS over the primary console this gen (remember the trend going on in japan with lack of console sales but high handheld sales?) and Mario Kart and Super Smash. Nintendo has just given great reason to cannibalize Wii U sales. Now that people have multiplayer they want to play the game with their friends and the 3DS does that competitively with the Wii U.

Because they're the biggest Nintendo series of all time and move a lot of consoles.

Because most people like to tell the truth.

lol, this is something somebody shouldnt say when there are alot more games than mk+ssb.

Nintendo isnt even trying anymore.

Name me the last Full 3D game (in 3rd person or first person) that Nintendo produced for its home console?

2D platformers, over the top view games or remakes do not count. Nintendo is living in the past.

super mario 3d world, and pikmin 3 and nintendoland before that. and got leg city and w101 as exclusives. and X, bayonetta 2, zelda, mario kart + others are on the way.

Out of those, the only game that meets the requirements is LEGO City, and yet, it's not a Nintendo game. Nintendo hasn't produced a full 3D game since Skyward Sword

Pandora's Tower will have an opening week of less than 37k in Japan. (Won!)
Pandora's Tower will sell less than 100k lifetime in Japan.
Stakes: 1 week of avatar control for each one.

Fullfilled Prophecies

Because it's already had some really great games. If pikmin, 3D world, etc didn't make a huge impact, it's unlikely X or Bayo will.

Also it's already pretty cheap. Price cuts will keep it from losing steam as the gen goes on, but I doubt they'd make a serious impact.

mega facepalm. no other games at E3? you think nintendo will show TWO games at E3? one already released and the other already announced? and they easily outshine sony and ms with their games, like always. the 3ds- wii u comparisson is too surreal.
