Wii U of course. You get two systems in one. Catch up on an awesome backlog of Wii games while getting to stay current on some bad ass Wii U games.

PS3 is basically 2 consoles in one too. Early PS3s are in fact 3 consoles combined..  3 of the largest, most diverse and highly praised libraries in gaming history.

OP:

I recommend PS3. It has an excellent library of games (as far as modern gaming goes), free online gaming, and it's still getting great third party exclusives like Persona 5. Tales of Xillia 2 and Zestiria.

Unless you really really like Nintendo and/or have interests in the backwards compatibility aspect, the Wii U is not the best choice given its current status. Its future is dim. I personally will be buying one because I'm interested in the original Wii library and I adore Zelda. Zelda is the shit!

True, but he said he missed Nintendo games so getting a Wii U would give him quite a bit to get caught up on. I really wish Nintendo would have snuck GameCube compatibility onto the Wii U though.

"Games are a trigger for adults to again become primitive, primal, as a way of thinking and remembering. An adult is a child who has more ethics and morals, that's all. When I am a child, creating, I am not creating a game. I am in the game. The game is not for children, it is for me. It is for an adult who still has a character of a child."

Shigeru Miyamoto

Buy them all? It's what credit cards are for.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

my suggestion. get a WiiU- it is backwards compatible. You cant play Mario Galaxy, SSBB, and many other great Wii/WiiU games, and be able to play the next Zelda/SSB/Mario etc.

i dont get.
everybody misses nintendo games, but no one wants to buy a wii U.

Social pressure.

The internet says Nintendo and the Wii U suck, so most people feel pressured to stay away from it. Its the sheep like mentality of society... until theres enough reason for you to shake off that pressure like say Mario Kart 8 or smash. An undisputed popular sucess. I am expecting Wii U sales to improve with those games out.

Just get a WiiU! It has many great exclusives and the poor system needs more love as well!

In the UK you can get wii's from £20-30 and while the wii u has wii compatibility most wii's have gamecube compatibility that also adds a huge range of games including many classics.

The PS3 is not dead, as you can see on this site week by week it easily outsells the wii u often approaching 2:1 and that is with hardware base already at 80 million plus.

It has to be said the ps3 ongoing is likely to get far more versions of multi-format titles than wii u and be better supported in the future for such games. Just look at 2013 to see how many major multi-format titles weren't available for wii u. So I would say the ps3 could well be more future proof than wii u.

Maybe I'm wrong here but I just see it as slightly dodgy owning two consoles that are commercially struggling. If a publisher decides not to bother with formats that are struggling at retail we could well see games released on 360, PS3 and PS4 with no xbone or wii u versions.

I personally think the wii u is better combined with a ps4. The PS4 provides the best console versions of multiformat games plus a library of games from developers all around the world plus you have Nintendo's brilliant games for wii u (but not much else).

If you haven't played the big old Wii games yet, there are many gems I could recommend. Super Mario Galaxy 1/2 and Metroid Prime Trilogy are my favourites. Also the Wii U will get a couple of big hitters this year, but nothing too much.

The PS3 is also a great choice since it's pretty cheap now, but its library is mostly like the Xbox except for the exclusives. And there are many good ones!

Look up the games you would like to play, and choose the console from that.

Yep.

Wii U.
