Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Has 3D finally earned its worth on the 3DS for you?

No. I like the 3D feature, but the cons outweigh the prones. Because the 3DS only works on the top screen, and must be looked at in a particular angle, it makes many of the mechanics that worked so well on the DS not work at all on the 3DS. Games that focused mainly on the touch screen (Kirby Canvas Curse, Kirby Mass Attack, Elite Beat Agents) have been MIA for the most part. Games that SHOULD be played entirely on the touchscreen (Nintendogs, Final Fantasy Theatrythm) have awkward control schemes due to the forced focus on the top screen. Games that involve constant switching between two screens (Bowser's Inside Story, The World Ends With You) aren't a good fit. Games that required you to hold the DS in a "book" style have all but disappeared.

Just think about how many games really make great use of the touch screen or dual screens. Kid Icarus Uprising... ummmm maybe art academy... and uhhhhh... Hmmmmmmmm... I dunno. Meanwhile on the DS we had Bowser's Inside Story, Kirby Canvas Curse, Kirby Mass Attack, The World Ends With You, Rhythm Heaven, Wario Ware Touched, Metroid Prime Hunters, Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks, Nintendogs, Meteos, Cooking Mama, etc.

That's not to say touch controls are inherently better than non-touch controls, but it was nice to have a variety and more possibilities. The forced focus on the 3D screen has limited these possibilities. While I genuinely enjoy the 3D effect in many games (Uprising, Pilotwings, 3D Land, Luigi's Mansion, Resident Evil Revelations) it was not worth it.

Me personally, i don't ever use 3D on my 3DS. I just play the games it has to offer which is why i bought the handheld, the 3D is just one of the many features to go along with the great library the 3DS has to offer.

Its still gimmicky. The 3DS has an amazing line up of games, none of which are greatly enhanced by the 3D.
It's a good selling point, nothing more.

i wouldnt even consider it a good selling point as they had to cut the price early.

Oh, I agree there, it was definitely not a good selling point!

As a parent, I don't mind admitting that I was wary of the 3DS to start with. I was worried that the 3D aspect would hurt my younger kid's eyes. I wouldn't even consider buying it until I discovered that you could control launching in 3D via parental controls. We eventually bought it with Mario Kart 7, but it was played with the 3D locked out for a long time.

Then we got Luigi's Mansion 2.

That game really showed off the 3D, and added to the experience for me. Even though the game has gyro controls they are very sensitive and the movements small, so I never found myself losing the sweet spot in 3D. There are certain tasks in the game that are easier to complete in 3D.

That said, I can only manage playing in 3D for half an hour or so before my eyes get tired.

I don't think it's as much of a gimmick as it was initially perceived, although I'm just as happy playing the 2DS as I am the 3DS. I think the 3D is a good feature, and I'd be sorry to see it go if and when Nintendo releases their next generation of handheld. I'd like to see what they could do to improve on the 3D, to make it easier for those who are missing out.

Overall, it's earned its worth, IMO.

Can take or leave 3d...but I like the 3ds regardless.

Yes but it had already since Ocarine of Time 3D.

It just makes things better.

I liked the 3d effect from the beginning. Some games are better suited for it than others.

My new 3d-effect-favorite on the 3DS is "Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy".

That game is a stereoscopic piece of art, each background captures the scenario from a perfect viewing angle for 3d depth perception.

Both my kids have had it off since the first couple days of owning their 3DSs. Its a wasted feature that just isn't impactful or enjoyable enough to matter. Better to leave off and gain better battery life. Had the 2DS been in the same physical format as the 3DSXL, they would have preferred it.

Colorblind people could argue the same way. "Color in movies / games? Its a wasted feature that just isn't impactful or enjoyable enough to matter."

Or deaf people: "Voices in movies / games are a wasted feature that just isn't impactful or enjoyable enough to matter. Subtitles should be enough for everyone!"
