Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony's 1st party multiplayer fail

Well its just not easy to create a great multiplayer game.. Just look at the many failed MMO's or even FPS like APB, Defiance or Dust.. Sony tried it a few times and failed.. I think thats also the reason for their Destiny support.. Sony just doesn't have the talent in house to produce a lasting multiplayer.. In hindsight it pretty amazing how titanfall is doing.. To gain attention is easy but to keep it is way harder

I lack figures but other then Halo what single game had more online pay then GT5 did for Sony on PS3 ?

http://www.gtplanet.net/gran-turismo-5-goes-interstellar/

Last gen I went 360 for crossplatform and online and PS3 for exclusives and single player.

This gen is 100% flipped.  Though XBox for exclusives period and not single player (lol?)

When I look back at SNES, PS1, PS2 and some of the greatest games and memories of all time and my entire libraries of memorable games... all of them are single player or local coop! NOT VERSUS.  Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy IV and VI, Xenogears, Xenosaga, Earthbound, Super Metroid, Wild Arms, Kingdom Hearts, Resident Evil, Lunar, Star Ocean, Megaman, Secret of Mana, Star Tropics, Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time, Goof Troop, Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers, Conkers Bad Fur Day, Mario Kart, Super Mario World, Suikoden, and on and on and on as I stare at my wall of games going back to NES.

All of the best (console) gaming memories I have are from single player and local coop games.  My best multiplayer memories are from WoW. I was a online FPS fanatic at it's dawn on the PC during the Quake 1-3, UT, Counterstrike etc days.  1000s of hours lost and I can't remember anything that stands out, it was just mindless twitch reflex and trying to stay on the top spot in frags.  Completely forgettable.  But I can still remember every wide eyed jaw dropping story revalation at 3am huddling under a blanket in the cold of night with only my SNES keeping me warm as I played FFII for the first time.

And when I stopped breathing for a moment and felt my body go numb when Xenogears dropped the bomb on my soul and it all clicked... and the bittersweet dispair and hopelessness I felt when the ending theme started and the credits rolled....and similar not even first 10 minutes into The Last of Us and close again in Ni no Kuni.  That kind of thing you NEVER forget.  You will NEVER EVER EVER get that kind of experience in a multiplayer online shooter.

Does 20+ years of enjoyable gaming need to end so nobody else in the current and upcoming generation can experience what it USED to and SHOULD be about, just so a few 14 year olds who can't own real guns and Dorito chugging 35 year olds who still act like they are 14 can shoot each other over and over and over again in the same 3 alley backdrops?

I do enjoy multiplayer games too. Played WoW for 3 years and that will wear out anyone.  Recently Borderlands 2 coop has been fun as hell.  Trying to remember what else but my shelves are disorganzed and being moved around and all my 360 games are blocked by PS3 :P Next massive loss of sleep inducing game this gen will probably be The Division. I'm not even hyped about Destiny because it's related to Halo and Activision and I'm pretty turned off those crowds after enduring 8 years of 360 and watching the death spiral of everything I loved about video games since I was a kid.

Sony and Nintendo exclusives are like those epic landmark movies like Dances with Wolves or masterpieces like a Kubric film that the mainstream is too ADHD to watch to the end or understand and appreciate it like a fine whine while MS exclusives are basically Fast and the Furious and Hangover...and over and over and over...because you know it's not manly for dudebros to shed tears or feel sad.  Even I'm in the mood for both once in a while, but they need to stay far FAR apart from each other.

Well, Maybe Sony doesn't need a "killer app." I think the way that the 3 works is

Sony = A bunch of AAA first party games designed to fit your needs but none that can really carry the console by themselves with a mix of third party and jrpgs
Microsoft = The Best online and social games that carry the platform with a mix of third party exclusive content
Nintendo = A bunch of killer apps that can carry the console but a large lack of third party support hinders it from being a success

Obviously there are exceptions and flaws to that but that's my quick summary view anyway

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Legends (2 player co-op online/local)
Mercenary Kings (4 player co-op online/local)
Warframe (4 player co-op online)
Killzone (32 player mp online) (co-op coming SOONtm)
Black light Retributions (onine mp)
Resogun (2 player co-op online/local)
Dead Nation (2 player co-op online / local [with a viewer interaction mode])
FFXIV (MMO online)
DCUO (MMO online)

these are all games you cannot get on the xone... so yeah sony really failing on the online part aren't they :-p

Jizz pretty much summed up what I'm thinking also, so not gonna repeat the same thing, but this might also be relevant:

"The number of console titles released with multiplayer is decreasing, says game industry market research firm EEDAR.

Speaking at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, EEDAR co-founder Geoffrey Zatkin revealed that in 2013 the percentage of games with no multiplayer support rose to around 46 per cent of all released retail titles. That’s the highest figure since 2009.

The generally perceived notion is that publishers are seeking to increase the longevity and market appeal of traditionally single-player franchises by tacking-on competitive multiplayer modes. However, that trend seems to be on the slide.

Meanwhile, the prevalence of co-op is on the rise. In 2013, around 38 per cent of retail console titles featured co-op play, up from 29 per cent the previous year. In 2007 that figure was just 18 per cent."

Last Gen. Was MS, now its Sony's turn.

The Last Of Us failed in mp since they couldn't add infected to it, warhawk, starhawk,  and mag failed to get any traction and are dead, and they failed with lbp karting and ps allstars with much limited budgets and vision. Uncharted had tacked on mp and resistance while fun also failed to delever anything new.

I love Sony but imo in the long run xbox will catch up if Sony doesn't take its head out of its ass and innovate in multiplayer. I love single player but with the ps4 its been just that. Only sp games. While microsoft has and will have mp focused games like titanfall, Dead Rising, plants vs. zombies garden warfare, sunset overdrive, and Halo 5. All of these have great communities, are popular, and are system sellers due to wanting to play with friends. PS4's exclusives consist of indies, indies, indies, Killzone:SF (bleh), Knack, Infamous 2nd son, MLB, and the Order. Where the fuck are the big budget games? Where the hell are the mp big sellers? Planetside: Delayed, Wheneverquest landmark comes out, and h1z1 are all games that could be huge but ofc who needs to release them on the ps4 anytime soon.

The Last of Us and Uncharted are singleplayer games at heart and yet they both have fantastic multiplayers, something that many SP focused games cannot achieve. While i do agree that their multiplayer offerings in general dont appeal to a large audienece doesnt necessarily mean they're bad. Warhawk, Killzone 2 and Gran Tursimo 5 are some of my multiplayer games of the last generation.

The other thing is this generation is going to see alot of multiplayer only games or MP focused games so why should Sony fire all guns towards MP titles (I would much rather great singleplayer experiences), its going to be a hard market to be successful in considering the competition that is already present: Call of Duty, Battlefield, Destiny, The Division, Titanfall and many more to come, 3rd party can easily carry the Sony's lack of great MP games. But that being said i do agree that they should have 1 MP focused developer like Zipper interactive used to be. Also SOE should prioritise the PS4 first before PC (or at least release they're games at the same time), after all they are a Sony owned company/studio.

so Sony's doomed for not having enough people to work on games yet big enough to make all those games you listed above(and more)

Sony has proven tha you don't have to hae either a big dev gropup/money/or both to make reta games(ND alone has proven that greatly) True sony doesn't have a killer mp app like halo or gears(and I'll throw TF in as well) but it didn't stop from cathching and surpassing the 360 or the rubber Sony's laying down with the PS4

we also most remember that different console have different preferences; what might work for one doesn't have to work for the other

That's the exact thinking that stops innovation from happening.

Is it wrong that I want Sony to create a big mp franchise with the scope of cod, halo, gears, battlefield?

Something that gets major mainstream traction

That big franchise will then inturn sell many more ps4's and get many more xbox - ps4 converts and these people then can be aware about the other games that playstation makes and they can then buy those as well.

Well then you get much more marketshare and revenue which would also allow sony to invest in more games.

So what im saying is nothing but beneficial.

I'm not asking Sony to change anything with their current studios, i'm asking them to invest in a big scope franchise to rival the halo, and mario of their competitors.

So far everything about the ps4 is right and my suggestion would just make it much much better.

Also I would shut the fuck up if Sony just got back crash bandicoot, but without money sony can't do that :( and that's why I believe what I said can change that and let Sony get back on track after 360/wii took away a ton of their marketshare.

That's exactly what STOPS innovation from happening.  Trying to make all the consoles the same and all the games the same.

What's wrong with having one big studio to focus on mp on TOP of what Sony already has?

To me, it sounds like you might want to start saving for an XboxOne. Halo and Gears aren't coming to PS4 and that's what your friends want to play.
