It's the most powerful handheld against the least powerful console of same generation. Wii U is more likely to be discontinued before the PS Vita.
Wii U can pass Vita's total numbers late 2014 or somewhere in 2015 if the first party games are really effective at moving units, though. |
I would usually agree with u about Playstation being more future proof based on PS1/PS2/PS3/PSP all having 10 years or so on the market but im not sure if the same can be said for Vita.
Vita is doing reasonably well in Japan and will have a healthy full cycle there due to the countries handheld nature and a steady stream of Japanese centric games but its doing pretty horrible in the west with nothing in the forseeable future that will get it out of this rut.
According to the most recent NPD it only sold 10-15k last month in USA, the biggest thing it has going for it in that region is a Borderlands 2 bundle but really how much will a 2 year old port help it? It doesnt seem to be fairing much better in Europe either. I cant imagine a long life in those regions with those type of sales, western third parties arent supporting it and Sony doesnt seem to be releasing many games for it either so as of now there is nothing to improve its situation in the west.
On the other hand while Wii U isnt doing very well in any region, it seems to be pretty consistant across the board. Also it has some things lined up with potential to improve sales or at the very least keep them from falling. It still has a decent amount of Nintendo's big hitters like Mario Kart/Smash Bros/Zelda yet to release (which is the reason most people buy Nintendo consoles) and those games are pretty popular in every region. Also it has some Japanese centric games thay may help it out there like X, Hyrule Warriors, SMTxFE. Another thing is Wii U has yet to recieve a major price yet, technically it did last year but the base price remained the same at $299 so it was more like adding value to a current bundle while Vita has already had a major price cut.
So Wii U will likely have a normal life cycle of 5 years give or take a year in all regions while Vita may have a long healthy cycle in Japan but if things dont change soon in the west I dont think it will last more than 2 more years.
