Forums - Movies & TV - Wreck-It Ralph 2 in production at Disney

Wreck-It Ralph composer Henry Jackman says that Disney is currently working on the story for a planned sequel.

In an interview with Collider, Jackman was hesitant to say more because he considers Wreck-It Ralph 2 to be a project already in development.

“I can’t tell you more, not because I’m being coy, but I believe that it is officially on the cards,” he said. “I don’t know any more other than a story is indeed being written. I’d be very surprised not to. I’m not blowing my own trumpet. Forget about the music. Just the movie itself I thought was a fantastically imaginative and creative piece of work. Rich [Moore], the director, actually got involved in the writing. There was another writer and I can’t remember his name (Editor’s note: it’s Phil Johnston). Just as a concept, it would be almost remiss of them not to write another one. It’s a great idea and it’s a great character.”

The animated film following a video game character in search of a better reputation grossed $189 million in the United States and $281 million internationally. Voice actors include John C. Reilly, Jack McBrayer, Sarah Silverman, and Jane Lynch.

Speaking to Hypable to promote the DVD and Blu-ray launch of Wreck-It Ralph in February 2013, director Rich Moore told us of an idea for the sequel that he and Reilly were intrigued by.

“Are there other Ralphs [in this world we were introduced to in the original]? What would happen if another Fix It Felix, Jr. game was plugged in?” he asked. “Are there other Ralphs that are more contemporary? Is there another version of the game that was made for mobile? Are there those kind of Super Smash Bros types games where all the characters are gathered in a fighting game? What would that be like for Ralph to come face to face with those different iterations of himself?”

Wreck-It Ralph was Walt Disney Animation Studios’ 2012 film. It was followed by the wildly successful Frozen last year. Next up is Big Hero 6 this November and Zootopia in 2016.

I thought it was a good movie but one that didn't really need a sequel. Thoughts?

Yeah it was sort of known that this was planned already. The original movie was not only charming, but used less budget than initially planned and was finished ahead of scheduale, but it grossed pretty well.

It would be crazy not to make more. Especially cause theres several gens of video-games they can explore still.

Using all that extra money to buy movie rights to Mario. ;p

This is my feeling too. A funny, intelligent, original movie, for sure, but not necesarily one that needs a sequel.

It was a much larger success than predicted... Now it shall be milked. Such is the world we live in today.

I'll probably go see it though.

The first one didn't make much money though in comparison to other Disney movies.
