Forums - Gaming Discussion - Iphone should be tracked on this site

I think it's time Vgchartz tracks the iphone. Why? Because the day of "dedicated handhelds" are all but a memory. Both the 3DS and PSV are now basically entertainment devices which play games. The iphone easily doubles both handhelds in software sales combined (yes, I know that most of those sales are for $0.99-$3.99 games but that's irrelevant) and it's how most mainstream and casual gamers play and consume their games. Since Q1 2012, the iPhone has sold around 140 million units. That's nearly 100 million more than the 3DS in less time on the market. Cut it anyway you want, that's impressive.

Let's face it, times have changed and are changing. Do I love traditional handheld gaming? I'm 34 years old. My first memories of handhelds start in 1989 with the original Gameboy which I got as a birthday gift. So yes, of course I love handheld gaming. I wish things could stay the same forever, but that's not realistic. Things change. You don't have to like it, go along with it or endorse it. But you HAVE to accept it.

I think we should adopt the iphone as a gaming platform, for better or worse, and track it along with the other platforms. What do you think?

No. People by an iPhone as a phone first.

Mehh, we already have a lot of sites that do that and the graphs/stats are all publicly available anyway... Plus they have a new iphone every year... It will be nuts to track all that unless your including all the iphone as one phone but that wouldn't make much since cause its all different hardware

And not to mention that mostly hipsters buy iphones!

jk
not really

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

Once we start tracking digital sales, I think that makes sense.

Nope. iPhone doesn't have many good quality games, and those that are decent are ad infested freemiums or eye-candy with no real depth. No iPhone game comes close to Bravely Default or Gravity Rush, and that isn't likely to change soon. And lol @ the 3DS and Vita as being primarily entertainment devices. Neither is optimized for entertainment, watching Netflix or YouTube on either is a pain. Do you even own a handheld?

If iPhone gets tracked, Android phones should get tracked too because they're much more popular and Android too is popular as a gaming platform.

I agree! The Mobile Phone Master Race should definitely get more love on VGChartz!

Why track it when we can't track its software ?
Even tracking PCs would make more sense right now.

The problem with Android is the fragmentation issue. iPhone is one product, for the most part. Maybe we could track the Galaxy line? Galaxy/iPhone/3DS/PSV? I would support that.

There's no point in tracking it, because not every system will be used primarily for gaming. In addition, we can't track sales so there's really no merit behind doing something like that.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.
