Nintendo should put out a new console next year that's more powerful than and costs less than the PS4. Instead of using the gamepad, let it have remote play compatibility through an app with the 3DS. Sure they'd upset six million customers that bought a Wii U, but they'd be the most powerful console on the market for a cheap price. That'd give them the third party support, and the amount of hardcore that would go over to them being the most powerful console would more than make up for any fans who abandoned Nintendo by such an act.

They either need to do this or else lose billions of dollars they could have made. That'll set them two years back, but the thing is, Nintendo can use this to their advantage, next gen launch after the competition and make the most affordable and powerful console. Let Sony and Microsoft fight it out, and then guarantee a sale as atleast a secondary console(or primary) because of the high quality first party exclusives from Sony fans who dislike Microsoft and Microsoft fans who dislike Sony.

How about WiiU 2.0?  Should Nintendo start over?  Nintendo can put out a new console that could have better CPU/GPU than PS4/Xbox1 but potentially at similar price if Nintendo decides to put a new console out within the next year or 2.  Considering that PS4/Xbox1 started development few years ago, if Nintendo starts development for a new console now, Nintendo can get similar parts for cheaper or better parts at same price.

I suppose Nintendo would piss off the customers that just bought a WiiU, but there are ONLY 6 million (at a pace to sell 20 million lifetime) that has bought a WiiU so that's not that many people.  Although Nintendo would be about a year or 2 behind PS4/Xbox1, they can potentially sell 80+ consoles if they can put a powerful but affordable console that has great 1st party exclusive (a given for Nintendo) with great 3rd party support (that can potentially be better than PS4/Xbox1 versions).

It's easy. Make the WiiU a handheld. The only thing holding it back is the lack of portability.

WiiU Lite. Same form factor of the WiiU gamepad, but totally portable with the hardware totally built in. Access to VC and eShop. Cloud storage and SD storage options. Boost the app selection through Android emulation. Now you got an iPad killer :)

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

I would say 3 years from now is a better choice.

Why wait 3 years?  WiiU is getting blasted right now.....

Consumer trust. You lose it, you're done.

Yes but until 2017, releasing consoles too fast will alienate consumers from buying your consoles.

Thinking long term, releasing another console to soon will just put Nintendo in the same position they are in now...their is a sweet spot somewhere but it isn't anytime soon

So, a Gen 9 console released 4-5+ years before it's competitors?

there's no reason for nintendo to release another console. nintendo has emphasized that they don't care as much about power, or third parties. they will carry the wii u with all their original titles. not to mention that miiverse is amazing. the only thing wrong with the wii u is the advertising.

2017 is the earliest they'll release a new console. I could possibly see 2016 for handheld, but no way for console. It'd be suicide. Consumer confidence would be lost, as would 3rd party support. EA and their ilk don't like Nintendo's way of business; there are philosophical differences that are all but irreconcilable. A Nintendo console would have to have superior hardware, a similar architecture, 50% market share and some hefty bribes in order to receive genuine support.

Nintendo's best bet is to combine their console and handhelds so that they can produce enough games that 3rd parties become irrelevant to their success. Nintendo are a software company, their hardware is a means to enable their software business, so long as they aren't losing money on the hardware, and enough software is being sold to turn a profit they're golden.

Absolutely not

I can see Nintendo releasing their Quality of Life platform late next year as a "third pillar" of sorts, at least while 3DS and Wii-U last. Not sure of what I would think of it if something like that indeed comes to be the case.
