Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Why doesn't the xbone have original xbox backwards compatibility?

It seems Sony may be working to bring ps1 and ps2 compatibility to the ps4 even allowing use of original discs to be used. While ps4 is in no way powerful enough to emulate ps3 it's more than capable of doing good ps1 and ps2 software emulation. Seems a great feature to extend the catalogue of games available.

Why doesn't Microsoft create a software emulator for xbone that allows original xbox games to be run.  This time instead of invidual profiles for games the xbone should be able to offer full software emulation.  The original xbox has a fantastic range of games, many classics.

Is it worth doing? Do people care enough about backwards compatibility?

Do you have original xbox games you'd like to play on xbone perhaps with far faster loading times and upscaled graphics to 1080p?

It was maybe not really used on 360 so that they think that it will be used even less on Xbox One.

Games on demand has 3 original Xbox games in the top 300 on the 360 marketplace. Halo, Fable and Crash Bandicoot and Halo is the only game with at least a decent place. It doesn't really seem as if people really care about it even if you see many on the internet talking about it from time to time.

Not even San Andreas is in the top 300 on 360 and on Xbox One there would be maybe 0 games selling at least more than a few hundred units...

Would just add more development costs ad time for something 90+% of the userbase will never bother with. The original Xbox did not have a very big install base.

Xbox One - PS4 - Wii U - PC

It's probably not worth it considering the fact that the original xbox flopped.

No Achievements, bro bros love those. Plus it gives M$ more opportunity to make HD remakes and make more cash. Greedy bastards...

cuz it's old!

For similar reasons -- the Wii U VC library is small too

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

I guess its not quite the same as ps2 with the huge install base the ps2 had but still you could argue many of the games were of higher quality than ps2 games. I guess ultimately there aren't enough people about that have a collection of original xbox games that might be motivated to buy a xbox one so they can continue playing the same games possibly to a higher quality level while also buying new xbox one games.

You wonder if it would be a commercially viable emulator that could be downloaded from xbox live at a price for perhaps a small percentage of users who would want that feature.

I'm quite a fan of the original xbox. Truly amazing console for its day with some brilliant games. I found the xbox to be a much better console than ps2. If I had an xbox one I would want a original xbox emulator if available but realise I may be in a small minority of xbox one owners who want that feature.

For PS1/PS2, user base, game library were really huge and also this period is very nostalgic for some, so it could make sense, but for xbox 1 only, I'm not sure it's meaningful.

Probably cause the Ps3 had better exclusives than the Xbox did?
