Edit: Conclusions and Notes
Well, this month was a surprise. Rather than losing about 150 points like I was expecting, we GAINED 200 POINTS! The culprit: the VGChartz Xbox community, which basically tripled the number of points the Xbone got month over month DESPITE the release of Titanfall! I'm going to have to divide this month into winners and losers.
Winners:
- The Xbox One - Reinforced by a community that previously abstained from voting, the Xbone, as mentioned above, almost tripled its point total despite Titanfall coming out. So yeah, it became a force to be reckoned with pretty much within a month. For context's sake, the point difference between this month's Xbox vote and last month's is approximately as large as the entire handheld market was for April Edition. Plus, there was a vote for a 360 game. That's odd, but appreciated.
- Microsoft - As a publisher, Microsoft gained 112 points month over month, pushing it up from the #10 publisher up to #2, second only to the might Nintendo, and ahead of the traditionally powerful Square Enix and Sony that dominate the non-Nintendo portions of the charts. Halo led the way, but Quantum Break and Sunset Overdrive also aided this new giant. Speaking of which...
- Shooters - Shooters are far from unpopular on this feature, but they typically take a back seat to many other genres, especially the JRPG. This month however, led by the Xbone surgence, Shooters became the #2 genre, and only lost the #1 spot thanks to the strong showing of X. In comparison, the Action-Adventure game, typically #2, was about 55% as large as the Shooter this month.
- Nintendo - Although the Xbox took the lion's share of new ground, Nintendo as a publisher increased by about 40 points this month, as most evident in its three major Wii U games, despite the release of Yoshi's New Island. The Wii U in particular got over 440 points, no small feat for a platform with no games.
Losers
- Sony - Although Sony is still a major publisher, the release of Infamous: Second Son did not result in a major increase in other 1st party games. Thus, Sony's slice of the pie got smaller even as the pie got larger. Currently, Sony's chief upcoming games seem to be Uncharted and The Order: 1886... the former of which has an unknown release date and is bleeding development team members and the unknown quantity.
- PS3 - The PS4 did alright this month, albeit less remarkably than the triumphant Wii U or the rising Xbone. The PS3, however, lost about 72 points month over month, over a third of its total. Games like Final Fantasy X HD and Dark Souls 2 were released, but little was announced for the platform other than some Assassin's Creed spinoff I think.
- 3DS - Although it continues to sell well enough, the 3DS has fallen to under 50 points in the April Edition. Furthermore, early May brings the release of Kirby and Mario Golf, which constitute for over a third of these points. Long story short, the 3DS needs new game announcements ASAP, or momentum will die.
