Forums - Movies & TV - What do you like More? Shows or Movies

For years and years Movies and Shows had a huge quality gap between them.  Movies appeared to be high budget where as shows had poor effects and suffered because of them.  In recent years though Shows like Game of Thrones, True Detective, Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, and more has shown that they too can bring quality to shows shown at home.  Not only with high qulity but in most cases more thought out and elaborate stories due to a show can last for season spanning 50+ hours to tell a story where a movie is on average usually around 120 minutes. And just as the quality seems to be rising in shows, it also appears they are being rewarded by it giving them a big userbase.

So with all that said I'm curious, what do you find more engaging, shows or movies?  From  my opinions above I assume you know I'm picking shows if they're of high quality.

I prefer shows much more. I like watching the characters and plot develop over many episodes. Poor effects and low budgets hasn't been that much of an issue for me. And it should be noted that a show over 5+ seasons can make more money than big movies, and can go on to make billions after the show finishes from syndication money.

Shows, movies tend to be to short and lack the time needed for true character progression.

Shows, especially ones that have lots of nudity.

My one main gripe about shows is networks canceling them and you never know what will happen next. Especially The Borgias, Dark Angel and Survivors.

I agree we are in the golden era of television (thanks to cable and premium channels).

It use to be films were just better, now they are distinct experiences that feel equal to me, just different.

Television is now a place where slow arc can develop over hours and have intricate plots with many characters. Films are event based and have to often have resolution as a self contained narrative. My favorite show (no surprise here) Game of Thrones simply has to have 10-20 hours per book to properly tell the whole story. I don't care if you had 500 million dollars, you could not do the story justice with 2-3 hour film per book.

I prefer shows because they're ongoing and leaves you coming back (if they're good). Movies are one & done/wait for the sequel which is never as good.

*shameless plug* If you haven't please check out Spartacus on the Starz network. It's wrapped so you can watch the entire series right now. One of the greatest series ever on television.

Keep up with the ratings and you'll know if your show will be cancelled! Or you can ask me and I'll tell if your shows are in danger of cancellation.
