With a completely new name nintendo alienated the old folks and kids who think it's just a accesory, but with the number 2 they would've known it's the next version. That's my theory... :D


That might have worked, if only the casual market didn't migrate so much towards mobile.

I don't think the name was the problem, so much as Nintendo's marketing. Calling the Wii 2 or something similar to that might have helped a little, but if it had received the same treatment as the WiiU the name would have amounted to very little. PS is the only home console brand that actually uses a progressing number system with their home console names. "WiiU" is no small a change from the Wii than Xbox One is to Xbox 360, but the X1 is doing fine.



I always thought it was a terrible name. The worst console name ever. If it had a somewhat normal name, it may have sold better. Nintendo Ultimate? Nintendo Next?



How about the Nintendo Revolution?
