Forums - Sony Discussion - After the Layoffs Sony is Now Working on Hiring Again; Insider Explains What Happened

Stig and his team spent almost 100 million dollars on a game that failed every QA test that took. The game sucked. They shitcanned the game and a lot of the people involved. They offered Stig a spot on barlog’s project – he didn’t want to go from game director to something lesser so he quit.

Hey Stig, I know you part of an almost 100 million dollar failure, but here... have a job on another project. Seriously?  Guess it's easier to see why Sony's in financial hot water.

I think Evolution Studios could be in danger of being shut down IMO

Yeah they have to be the next to get "cuts". They missed the launch deadline and they still have no set release date.

And 100MIL is A LOT to invest in a failed game. Sony must of had a lot of trust on this dude to let him throw away 100MIL.

It's an insame amount, christ think of what you could do with that 0_o.

Even in terms of video game budgest it's high.

What I don't understand (in business terms) is how do you let him reset the project so many times? It makes no business sense at all.

and yes 100MIL is crazy high budget for a new IP

Sometimes it's hard to know when to back out (bit like gambling) I guess Sony felt they already spent millions on it and wanted to salvage something? That and it seems they give their studios a lot of free will.

And Team Ico like there is nothing wrong. If it wasn't because they have 2 masterpieces on their backs, the entire team would be fired by now. On topic: good to know, I just hope the new people is as good or better.

To be honest TLG was never set in stone. Its a dream that every one wants to come true...........SONY ARE YOU LISTENING STOP PLAYING

The last Guardian is everywhere, in the air, tv, internet, when you pay taxes. It's a control system of Sony with all of us.

Kind of goes to show that nothing is truly certain when it comes to making games. You can have a strong project leader, who done amazingly well in the past, made them a lot of money, and then he can turn around and struggle to produce something new and waste untold millions.

Same situation with Evolution, they were aquired by Sony directly because they were able to deliver Motorstorm for launch for the PS3, on schedule, and looking great (probably the most technically impressive launch title). Then they fail to do it when it's asked of them again.

You can see why people say new IP are risky.

So he throws out "almost 100 million" then when is called out on how ludicrous it sounds, it's "between 75 and 90 which are both uh you know close to 100" LOL. Not buying that for a second which makes me doubt everything else he posted.

In business terms, there is something called multi-project management. At this level, there are (or better: should be) highly trained project managers that oversee all projects and see that "everything goes as scheduled" - or intervene when things go wrong. When something goes wrong as in the case of Driveclub, it is not only the fault of the Driveclub project manager(s) at Evolution, but it is moreso a failure of the "supervisor managers". That is where Yoshida (I think that is the guy at the top of the games food chain) comes into play.  It looks as if Yoshida/Sony does not have the correct structures/competent managers in the multi-project management level, or they suffer from cultural problems (I take it from the Dodd link that the big cleanup happened in Japan studios, but apparently not elsewhere).

100mils isn't really insane (most Halos and GTAs fall into that cathegory).

Funny the one thread that places these events in a more realistic context and makes sense would have next to no replies. Now I understand completely why everyone makes flame bait threads around here.

No way Stigs project cost them 100M...I can't believe that. Didn't games like Uncharted and TLOU cost like what...30-40m? Killzone 3 like 20M? What the hell was Stig using that 100M for lol...

Interesting news OP, you have been all over this situation, is there any particular reason you have been covering this situation this extensively ?

Peter Dodd in full damage control.

He is just starting making shits up.

If he was any valuable insider he would have called even one of the departures and layoffs.

Pathetic, playing with people jobs and reputation just to praise a company, a company that in the last 2 years had layedoff almost 20k workers.
