Hi ,I was looking at the NPD numbers from January and the press releases of the companies and found something very interesting .

 Microsoft press release said

$159 million was spent on Xbox 360 games alone in January compared to $131 million on Wii and $80 million for PS3.”

 Well ,first we must suppose Microsoft has access to the full report of NPD as a client of NPD so this number must be as accurate as it gets .It can even have been somewhat spinned from MS ,but I will take it as fact ok ?

 Well ,this makes Sony look bad at first sight .Until wer realize its selling more than half the software of the 360 with far less than half the userbase .Then ,dividing between NPD LTD for each console we have that each PS3 customer generated some 22 dollars of income while 360 and Wii owners around 17 dollars .Now if we did the same with Vgchartz LTD figures it would be even worse for Wii and 360 ,as Vgchartz has their userbase way above NPD LTD while the PS3 LTD is even somewhat inferior to NPD LTD .

 As you can see ,Sony PS3 owners are buying the same games or better that 360 or Wii owners .So PS3 weak attach rate "because most people buy it as a BR player " is definitely debunked .

 Well ,this for starters .

 Then ,I dediced to do some maths .If 159 million were spent on 360 software and putting an average of 60 dollars per game (theres many budget games but Rock Band and GHIII were in the Top Ten and are 170 and 99 respectively ) we have that the 360 sold some 2 650 000 games in the whole month .Wii some 2 183 000 games and PS3 sold some 1333 333 games .

Right ,then I was looking to see the software numbers in vgchartz for the January month .I gave up on wii numbers because Wii Sports and Wii Play are confounding everything and I dont know if their numbers (at least Wii Play ) are included in those 131 million spent .If anyone wants to do it himself there he goes I am not that interested in the Wii .

So I compared directly PS3 software and 360 software for the month .Vgchartz puts the 360 software for the month at 3 586 000 units .Vgchartz puts PS3 software at 1563 000 games sold for the month .

 So both software sales were overtracked ,but while PS3 was overtracked by some 220K units 360 software was overtracked by nearly 1 million units .

What do you think about this ?

Firstly NPD does, and should use Wii play, (despite it being bought for the remote, it offsetts the fact that they don't use Wii sports)

secondy Wii games cost less than PS360 games so that bumps that up, and Wii and 360 also have a range of budget titles unlike PS3 (this is at least true in Europe, perhaps I am wrong to use it in America)... so that bumps them up more.

Despite this though the PS3 is still doing well, it's just you cannot give each console an average game price beacause they are all different and you don't know the breakdown.

Edit: it is particularly funny that you used the same average game price for Wii ($60) as you did for the other two... was this a mistake on your part, or on purpose?

i think by looking at the ps3 software ps3 is overtracked by NPD =)

wii games are MAX 50 except gh3

wii sports is NOT included as it has no sku or price

u should look at how many gh3 and rockbands were sold in jan and use that info to get a more accurate gauge of # of games sold

Well ,now I have done the Wii numbers too .

Vgchartz gives it 3 452 000 games sold .

With Wii we cant make the division between 60 dollars as Wii games generally tend to cost less .I will make it around 50 ,the average media .

After NPD it should have sold 2620 000 games .

Now lets detract from that 3450 000 games the Wii Sports ones that were ..317 739 .We have exactly 3 132 261 games .

Well ,after NPD Wii Sports would be less ,just 274 000 units but it doesnt matter as NPD didnt track this one .

Finally we have the Wii games some 500 K overtracked .

I havent included Canada data as it wasnt available for NPD or a MS press release as the original .

That would mean if 10% of the sales were there that Vgchartz is spot on PS3 games sold for the month ,overtracking Wii games by some 250-300K units and overtracking 360 games by about 800K for the month .

You must be using the sum of each NPD month for their totals, because I would bet a lot of money that NPD totals are higher for Wii at least than when you add the months, if not then NPD really really sucks at tracking the Wii, and therefore should be disregarded in the future.

Well ,we should remove Forza ,Marvel and Motorstorm too as I did with Wii Sports .Wii Play was counted by the NPD data ,though .
And the canadian data I just adjusted by 10% as it is usually .
Not knowing how much money was spent there its a irresoluble problem to do this right .
Budget games are a problem .But Guitar Hero III and Rock Band sales could be adjusted to price too .
I dont think its a useless approach .

At least it serves to show us that PS3 software is holding its own more than good being more than half the respective userbases of Wii and 360 and selling more than half 360 soft and 61% of the Wii (even including Wii Play ) .

Wii games cost $50? When? Wii games retail from $90 to $20 in America. I've paid for new non-bundled Wii games:

$20 1

One month, especially post-Holiday January is too short a time period to draw such conclusions. The holidays is when all the retail effort is put forth.
