Oculus Rift + Facebook + steam machine VS Project Morpheus + PSN + PS4. Which has mass market appeal?

The real money of VR does not lie in gaming. Sony would be amiss if they left out the casual markets- that don't purchase gaming consoles. (As well as the sciences, and wherever else VR is applicable).

Yeah people dont realize how massive things like VR tourism, VR cross country or international meetings, etc are going to be.

If done right VR has the potential to change everything.

AR will destroy VR in the mainstream.

I dont understand why you keep saying this.....they arent the same thing. At all. Its impossible to use AR for something such as VR tourism.

AR like Google Glass is very useful for something to wear daily. VR will be for specialized scenarios such as gaming, tourism, movies, and meetings. The two technologies really pose little threat to each other.

Why do you think that?

AR is already going in the latest smartphones, its inherently cheaper and easier to develop for then VR. Furthemore, AR is mobile friendly, VR is not, in fact VR can only be used in sedentary situations, while VR can be used practically anywhere with internet, or not if the device has a database on it. My friend let me use his Google Glass from his Mobile Computing class and its really small and unobtrusive.

AR has the price, development, style advantages with a longer time on the market to boot. VR might be better for gaming, but in the social realm it doesn't stand a chance at all. Hence Facebook's aquisition is quite confusing because VR is best in hardcore gaming scenarios, controllers, touch, and AR have a better chance in the casual gaming space, and AR will own the mainstream space.

where the ef does all this money come from. Facebook dont have this kind of cash. $19B for whats app now $2B more for this they only profited something like 1.8B last year and accumulatively do not have anywhere near $21B

afaik most of the money they spent is actually company shares, while the rest probably is from the massive money pool they got by issueing shares to the public

@ topic )

I suppose they had a lot of evil companies to choose from and chose a vile one.

Farmville will be incredible with this! and Candy Crush Saga will be elevated to new heights! I wonder if they just plan selling it to MS for $4bn in 6 months...

Those specialized scenarios aren't mainstream. VR tourism is a nice concept, but AR does it easier and cheaper, same with meetings. Only with media consuption does VR have the advantage and even then, it depends on how much of the environment you need to be aware of. VR inherently has a disadvantage with multitasking.

Did you just say movies arent mainstream.........

Your whole argument here makes no sense. AR and VR are different things. They arent even competing technologies.
