Forums - PC Discussion - Is anyone else worried about Star Citizen?

I'm not worried, because I always thought, and still think it's going to be massive dissapointment.

I could be wrong. And hope I am.

Yes, they are clearly abusing the people who are invested in their "game" ... Mind you I have no problem with a game needing you to play 100 hours for you to see every little upgrades it has to offer, the problem is with the game breaking transactions, they clearly expect people to buy virtual "goods" to save time... Why offer to save this time, shouldn't playing the game and building your fleet/upgrading ships be the game? Otherwise, if it's like a competitive fps, the everyone should have at least access to the same equipment, you know, so no one can buy the victory... This is just not fair game, I wonder why people embark in this.

Aye. 100 hours to get the best possible equipment and items in a game is very understandable, and I would even go as far as to say that I like it that way, it makes the game more fulfilling. Having ships selling for hundreds of real-life dollars is despicable, and taking away a person's ship (which could be worth hundreds of dollars) when it crashes (and you don't have/can't afford the insurance), and making them grind out another 100-200+ hours or fork up $300+ cash to rebuy the ship (not even counting upgrades) is just stupid and greedy.

So I've spent $285 and I'm going in for another $85... That will leave me with an Avenger and Connie

Insurance is DEFINITELY not something you should be worried about. It's effectively just a small tax and really won't be a big deal, it is just a small little bonus for original backers

As for the price of ships, yes they are absurd and slightly concerning. But the studio definitely has its heart in the right place and I feel that it will be balanced appropriately. The problem was they set them too high at the start, since they didn't anticipate this demand. But they can't exactly lower them now without creating a huge problem can they?

They say that if you can't play enough, then you can save time, by spending a money. But when a fighter like the hornet costs over $100, it is at the very least going to take you a while to get there

But anyway, for now I'm just looking forward to actually being able to fly me ships next month

Most people expect the prices to go up. Apparently the ships are being offered at a massive disount, at least from what I could tell from community discussions and forum posts. It's just worrying that it's following the path of other pay-to-win games in which whoever invests the most cash in micro-transactions will come out on top. I agree though, the studio definitely wants to make the best game possible, I just owrry that they are getting a little too greedy.

It's not about greed, it's about some precedents they set at the start when the future was far from certain. They can't just make all the ships dirt cheap now that they've got all the older backers money and equally it would be stupid to stop allowing people to back the game

It's not pay to win because there's no winning. Most of the time you are going to fighting against AI and you can certainly keep it that way. You won't be able to just buy ships when the game comes out, you will be able to buy credits, but only in limited quantities

Just looking through this thread, there is a dangerous amount of mis-information out there

What mis-information? The economy of the game has never looked more pay-to-win than it has now. They even got rid of lifetime insurance. C'mon, you can only go so far with your fanbase before people get weary. How is this not pay-to-win?

But they've addressed lifetime insurace, it's nothing!!!!!!! You have to get insurance anyway, it's added automatically, it is not something to worry about

And if someone's got a bigger ship than you how is it going to affect you? You're just not going to be put in matchmaking with them

Yes, if you have a bigger ship with more cargo, then you can probably make more money, so it's a timesaver rather than winning. There is no real winning!

TBH I was never that interested in the MMO part of the game anyway. So I'm not too concerned on what business model they use to keep the servers running. As long as the Squadron 42 is good and sandbox is in there (with drop in/out co-op) I will be happy.

Insurance stacks, and gets exponentially more expensive the better the ship. You have to have your base ship insured, plus all your upgrades, plus all your cargo. That's gonna take a significant chunk out of your money, especially if you have one of the bigger ships. It's alright for the backers who got multi-month or lifetime insurances, but those who buy the game when it comes out may find themselves losing their ships.

You cannot disable PvP. They said it will be a slider where you can reduce encounters, but never completely get rid of them. What happens when you're in your Hornet that you saved up for 70 hours or so, and then you warp right into a newbie with a Constellation because they spent a lot of real life money? You get crushed if they decide they don't like you or that they want to be a pirate. You then lose your ship, which may take anywhere from a couple of hours to real-life days to get a replacement from the insurance company (especially if you die often in a small period of time). Realistic? Maybe. But it's a system made for those willing to pay up more money after the base price. Unacceptable, especially since there is no way to disable PvP.

Lifetime insurance is for the base hulls only. If you have a bigger and better ship, you can make more money, so they take the same cut of your money, just from a larger pot

You can decrease it, but you do realise that there is matchmaking? Also, a hornet versus a lone newbie in a Connie would be a decent match up. If the Connie had actual gunners and a manned P52, then you'd need backup, but the matchmaking would stop that from happening

You can also avoid PvP entirely if you stay in well policed space

Hulls are what cost the most anyway. Also, matchups or not, the high-end game with the bigger ships and more firepower is gonna be dominated by those who bought their way up. No way around it. If you wanna get a good position in a guild or faction, it probably won't come from your hard work. You'll have to pay cash to get the upper level ships. And if you don't pay cash, you'll be limited to Squadron 42 and hoping the matchmaking won't screw you over, at least until you've spent the exorbiant amount of time it'll take to get out of the starter ships.
