Forums - PC Discussion - Is anyone else worried about Star Citizen?

So, I'm a backer for Star Citizen. I spent $65 on a game that I'm super hyped about, and I don't really regret my purchase. But it seems like the game is going more and more pay-to-win.

I first got worried with the insurance installment in the gameplay. Now, they say insurance is in there because it wants to be like real life where you have to keep up payments, but ships are expensive, and if you don't have insurance (or can't afford it) on a super expensive ship (some of which will end up costing upwards of $500-700 o.0), and that ship crashes, you lose it. Forever. Forcing you to either grind out 100+ hours of gameplay to get it again, or to plunk down a huge amount of cash.

Now, the developer says that people have jobs and should be able to use cash to catch up with people who play the game. To an extent, I agree. Maybe some minor things you should be able to pay real-life money for, like special decals on ships or cosmetics and such. But, the only way to get some of these ships is to use real-world cash, because the amount of time it would take otherwise is just too much. The developer is basically saying that those who plunk down a bunch of cash after buying the base game will have an advantage over people who payed the base price and just want to play in an even playing field.

It's worrying that the developer is asking for such an exorbiant amount of money for in-game ships. Some of those cost as much as graphics cards. It's insanity, and it's troubling to see the game go in such a direction even when its already raised over $40,000,000.

I'm still looking forward to the game, have no doubt. I'm just scared that I payed for a glorified micro-transaction game that's even worse than some of the crap that companies like EA have tried to pull.

That's the danger of crowd-funding, I suppose.

i thought they were already millionaires by the looks of it,i backed it aswell,
i can't really spend much more, people have already bought very nice ships haven't they to start

This could make or break kickstarters in general seeing as how this will be the only game to prove that kickstarters are either OK or that their duds in general.

Yeah, I agree. The largest crowd-funded project in history. If the devs get too greedy, it will set a bad example for the entire industry as a whole.

The developer always came off as a douchebag to me, it was the reason I never donated even though it looked interesting. I have to trust the people I'm giving my money too.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

So you're fronting the bill for them to create a game where they can then make you pay them more money?

Yikes.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

That's exactly what I'm afraid of. Also the reason why I won't crowd-fund games ever again. They trap you with incentives, and when they change fundaental parts of the game later on the early backers get screwed.

I think its obvious they are getting greedy. With that said they are trying to develop one impressive game aswell.

So I've spent $285 and I'm going in for another $85... That will leave me with an Avenger and Connie

Insurance is DEFINITELY not something you should be worried about. It's effectively just a small tax and really won't be a big deal, it is just a small little bonus for original backers

As for the price of ships, yes they are absurd and slightly concerning. But the studio definitely has its heart in the right place and I feel that it will be balanced appropriately. The problem was they set them too high at the start, since they didn't anticipate this demand. But they can't exactly lower them now without creating a huge problem can they?

They say that if you can't play enough, then you can save time, by spending a money. But when a fighter like the hornet costs over $100, it is at the very least going to take you a while to get there

But anyway, for now I'm just looking forward to actually being able to fly me ships next month

Most people expect the prices to go up. Apparently the ships are being offered at a massive disount, at least from what I could tell from community discussions and forum posts. It's just worrying that it's following the path of other pay-to-win games in which whoever invests the most cash in micro-transactions will come out on top. I agree though, the studio definitely wants to make the best game possible, I just owrry that they are getting a little too greedy.
