Forums - Gaming Discussion - So when was the last time a game really blew you away?

A game that completely blew my expectations away that I really didn't have much interest for was okami.

I remember when I first saw the game I thought why the hell would I want to play as a wolf when I could play as a wolf and Link in TP...... haha stupid capcom. Then I think one of those gaming sites (I think it was ign) gave it game of the year when every other outlet was giving it too TP (this was a time when I still believed gaming sites were reputable). Being a gamer I think it is important to at least try every game that gets some kind of praise so I took a mental note of okami and knew that I would have to play it sometime.
When they decided to port the game to wii, I decided to get (I think it was cheaper than other games at the time, and the pointer controls seemed like a better fit than dual analog on ps2). Little did I know it would rank up there as one of the best games I have ever played ever and as said before I try to play all highly praised games.

The canvas painting gameplay is one of the most original and well executed gameplay that I have ever come across, almost everything in that game was perfect and smooth. Although I can understand the game falls in a difficult position control wise, it takes a little while to get use to drawing and pulling off the timing of the combos with the wiimote (actually about 10 mins in a 30+ hr game) ,and if you play it would DA the combat might seem incredibly slow, not saying the controls are bad actually it fits the wiimote perfectly but it would take getting use to because how many games have you played before in which you drew and fought all while being a wolf.

It is one of the few games that blend story and gameplay together perfectly, most games don't ever do this. (I was going to type more here but that would have pissed people off and probably deserves a thread of its own)

This is one of the few games that I always recommend, if you like zelda gameplay you should definitely play this game it will be almost impossible for you not to like it, if you just like video games you at least owe it a try.

Too bad hardly anyone ever played it

Actually it was the game i finished yesterday. Metal Gear Solid 4.

Boring in the first 3 chapters, but the rest... wow. Things you dont see on any other game. Nostalgia played to perfection, innovations like a cut-scene and gameplay happening side by side. It really showed the power of the PS3.

Final Fantasy VIII?

Yeah, a couple of moments popped into my head like Indigo Prophecy that used that technique.  I didn't want to rob him of his moment.

Well, even if it wasnt the first one to do it, what matters is that the game impressed me, and thats what this thread is about.

Recently Super Mario 3D World really did it, amazing game. Last gen, when Gears of War came out it really blew me away.

GoW III Blew me.
P3P blew me too
, I was intending to have few hours of some rpg that I'll forget the next day. *My avatar says it all*
And South Park recently, I thought it would be another dumb game derived from a movie/series. I was completely wrong.

That's not bad, most people need a significant other to do that for them.

For me, I have to go back to Xenoblade, which I guess means 2011. Awesome game though.

Persona 3 FES and Pokemon X.

P3FES because it was so deep. Aigis ftw.

Pokemon X because I was really worried about the future of Pokemon after playing White which I didn't like at all. X proved me that I was totally wrong and Pokemon brand is still alive and kickin'.

My dear lord. I had this pun in mind when I read the title, and I did not do it on purpose. *Maybe I'm just tired, it's already late now where I am*

Dark Souls. Bought it cause Im a sucker for (reasonably)hard games, put in 200 hours and am beating the PC version at the moment before I play DS2

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

To be honest, the last one which completely sucked me in and made me invest myself completely was Dragon Age: Origins. Needless to say Dragon Age: Inquisition i my most anticipated game right now.

The last time a game truly blew me away was Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2. There were some emotional parts that were so well done that made me shed a tear or two. I got goosebumps and an insane feeling that I haven't felt since. I, by no means, expected a fighting game to be that well made.

The other one would be Journey (not sure which one I played last). Despite reading the reviews, there was little doubt in mind that it'd be from terrible to good, but the entire experience and especially some parts (great music plus sliding on the sand) gave me a feeling of euphoria. The last stage was one of my favourite experiences ever from a video game.
