Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Water damaged 3DS

So, it rained inside my house tonight and apparently I put my 3DS in the only location of the house where it rained inside lol. I'm seriously talking about only a very small spot in the house, about the size of a 3DS...

I didn't even know it rained tonight until I saw my 3DS considering it's been 18-20 degrees celsius outside here for about a week now.

I turned it on at first(yeah, dumb thing to do I know) and both screens worked fine, but the upper screen had some flickers. After a couple of minutes the upper screen just turned black, so I turned it off. The lower screen works just fine(still does). I turned the system off for now and put it into a bowl of uncooked rice for the rest of the day. Not sure if that will work, but it's better than doing nothing. I also can't remove the battery because I don't have a screwdriver like that.

I bought my 3DS couple of months ago, so I still have warranty normally, but I'm sure it doesn't cover water damage. So what should I do? Return it to the store where I bought it and not mention the water damage part? They'll obviously be able to tell there's water damage once they're repairing it though... Best to just tell it and pay up I guess? What will this joke cost me?

Oh, and the 3DS was closed when it rained inside, not open. Don't know if that matters.

Maybe you should check if it covers water damage?

if you happen to have any shoe boxes around the house the little packs of Silica Gel which are found in those are fucking great at taking water out of the area around them, if you put the 3ds into a shoe box with some of those or 1 of the de humidifier boxes you can get in a 2euro store it will take every drop of water out of the system.

.... now for the bad news, it wont matter much to fix what has happened, from the sounds of it the front light has prolly suffered a short circuit and burned out, and those are not easily replaced, if you shine a bright light on the screen can you see stuff on it? that just isn't being lit or is it completely off?

If you wanted to be cheeky you could do the trick with the Silica gel/de-humidifier pack, dry out the 3ds completely, then attempt to return it to the store claiming it just stopped working and you have no idea what happened. Most likely it will be returned to a Ninty repair place along with a load of other sticky child destroyed systems and you'll get a refurbished unit back, no questions asked.

It wouldn't. Not like this. The 1 year hardware cover you get with systems never covers accidental damage, it's just failure of the parts during normal use. If he mentioned "left in the rain" when he returns to the shop they might not even take it back for repair and just say to get a new one.

Nintendo's warrenty doesn't cover accidental damage. Pretty sure the store warranty is just the same as the one from Nintendo(the receipt says I have to look at the 3DS manual).

Thanks for the response, can't check the screen right now because it's in a bowl of uncooked rice though. Any idea what this can cost me?

And no shoeboxes here either.

The dehumidifier packs I'm talking about look like this btw because there is a lot of expensive stuff out there for water removal http://galleryplus.ebayimg.com/ws/web/350856011667_1_0_1/1000x1000.jpg they can be found in most euro/pound stores and are not that expensive. If you say to the store that it rained on your system and they send it back you will probably be asked in the region of 60-80euros for the repair, or like I said they'll refuse to take it back because of water damage and just advise you to buy a new one.

guy towards the end says his repair of screens is being quoted at 125 canadian dollars... insane.

Thanks, you've been a great help. I guess I'll see what the store does first. €60 would be acceptable. Especially since my parents would pay for it, but I just hate wasting money even if it isn't directly mine.

It's probably best to just look for some mom n pop video game repair shop. There's probably one in your area. I'm sure they would give a better deal than sending it directly to Nintendo.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!
