Forums - Sales Discussion - Developers NEED the Wii and DS

First Rockstar are losing money, now EA announce losses!

I have no idea how such a huge company such as EA can lose money when they develop so many popular titles.

It occurs to me because of the huge development costs for games on the PS3 and Xbox 360, developers need Nintendo systms to be able to develop less costly and more profitable titles.

Yep third parties really need to adapt to Nintendo systems. That may be difficult given Nintnendo first party games typical dominance on Nintendo platforms, but I see Nintendo dominating the market over the next two years pretty much everywhere as far as hardware sales go. How bout EA or Rockstar or whoever goes to Nintendo to ask them if we can work on Nintendo franchise like Sega did with F-Zero X on the GC, or how Capcom worked on some of the portable Zelda games. And remember Soul Calibur 2 and how it actually sold the best on the GC because Link was in it. Third parties that aren't Square or Sega or Kanomi and don't have established franchises that will sell well on Nintendo systems need to find other ways to tap into that Nintendo system userbase.

The problem seems to be the game budgets.  It seems that games for the PS3 and 360 tend to have huge budgets to help development etc....but the number of bought units doesn't equate to development costs.

IMHO, the DS is the most profitable platform for any game developer at the moment.  Development costs are low and userbase is huge.  The only problem with developers making games for the Wii and DS is that they are technically restricted because of the hardware, so some developers want to push to be making the bigger more graphically enhanced and more technically superior games...but they are not getting good enough sales.

I think we'll see more multi-platform games being released similar to Spiderman 3 etc.

Prediction (June 12th 2017)

Permanent pricedrop for both PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro in October.

PS4 Slim $249 (October 2017)

PS4 Pro $349 (October 2017)

It is the same problem you see with movies ... Every studio seems to want to push the "Big Budget Blockbuster" of "Epic movie" but these movies cost a lot of money, very few producers/directors can handle the scope of the project (so a lot of projects turn out poorly), there is a limited number of consumers who are interested in these titles, and (because there are so many of these movies) they lose the "special" value.

Superman Returns was amazing in terms of effects and picture quality, but it cost a fortune and didn't get much in return. I think some developers should still strive for new technology, using the 360 and PS3...maybe the Wii too. But it's a risk because it needs to be an amazing game to get enough return.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

You have to rember alot of the money they are spending is R&D. Upgrading their texture sets, and such like that. Alot of games call on a universal texture archive for a large chunk of their resources. They also are working on creating 100% new engines, and have massive play-style teams working for the Wii/DS, trying to find the next big thing.

The costs of games will only go down, and today the prices are MUCH higher than they seem, becuase they are paying for universal texture sets, and engines. It's normal for companys that when they start pushing 75-100% of their resources to next gen to take a hit for the first few years. And with the fact there are now 3 groups of consoles.

PS3/360, Wii, PS2, PSP, DS

While 4 years ago, it was.

x-box, GC/PS2, GBA

That and EA has had a horrible year this year. WTF was worth buying?

 LOL

It occurs to me you have no clue what the hell you are posting bout.   Many Ea games sale better on PS3 then Wii, and those are only 360 ports.  The last thing devs need or want is to go toe to toe with a Miyamoto game on a nintendo platform.  Devs are alot better of making a multi platform 360/Ps3 and maybe PC game.

Nintendo fanboys need to get a reality check.

Blue3, you need a reality check because the EA games profit more from the Wii games than the PS3/360 ones. If you compare sales and then put in the profits and development costs, more money is made from the Wii version due to the low dev costs. Unless the other version sold MUCH more, I highly doubt that they make more money from the PS3/360 ports.

Maybe someone should tell Namco-Bandai then:

"Namco Bandai said it has sold only 300,000 copies of the 'Gundam Muso' game, which were released exclusively for PS3, far lower than its initial plan to sell at least 500,000 copies.

"Because of sluggish sales, Namco Bandai plans to release only 23 titles for PS3 in the current fiscal year, compared to 24 games to be sold to Microsoft Corp's Xbox360 and 37 titles to be released for Nintendo Co Ltd's Wii console."

With some very noteworthy exceptions, many multiplatform games do not sell dramatically better than they would as exclusive games; basically by releasing a game to the PC, PS3 and XBox 360 you do not (necessarily) get any higher sales then releasing it exclusively to the PC, PS3 or XBox 360.
