It's just, they always used it as a base to fund their other, more experimental films, and there don't seem to be so many of them coming out any more.

I don't care for this excuse at all. The Cars franchise is such a cheap cash-in, now. Cars was okay, Cars 2 was horrendous. (And the reasoning behind making another Cars was obvious at that point.)
All I'm hoping is that they make Incredibles 2 come out before Cars 3. Seriously, give that series a major rest and take a huge amount of time on it. Maybe, just maybe, then they won't muck it up so badly.
