Ys changes up the gameplay every so often just enough that you don't get bored. Ys:MoC has the different Artifacts that create puzzles to solve or manipulate the traversal in fun ways. The Action is always good and fun as well. Flash Guard and Step just elevate the combat for me.
I kinda get what the OP is saying. There is a similar aura of adventure and wimsy with Ys and Zelda. How they all circle around a light hearted affair (Zelda is about Link's misadventures with the Princess Zelda, Ys is about Adol's never ending pilgrimage to see all the world has to offer).
Totally different play styles tho, and like someone said....Ys isn't exclusive.
