Forums - Nintendo Discussion - So, Metroid Other M was a good game

Other M was

Excelent! 75 43.35%

Better than Prime 3 Corruption 26 15.03%

I like Adam 9 5.20%

Samus is the sexy girl? 61 35.26%

Total:171

Gameplay-wise, the game was decent, but it could've been even better if it had nunchuck support (seriously, why the hell were they thinking), i hated switching the Wiimote from horizontal to vertical. and the level design was pretty meh, it was linear but it wasn't like Fusion's atmospheric type of linearity, it was extremely devoid of inspirtation. and not to mention the power-ups, getting them felt useless compared to past entries where you would genuinely feel as though your power increased, where in this game Adam orders you to use whatever.

Story-wise, we have a HUGE problem. how the hell can they expect us to put up with a cry-baby Samus when in the previous game that was released (Metroid Prime 3: Corruption), Samus doesn't hesitate to kill the hunters, even though they were her partners.

as for the Baby, in Super Metroid, she gives it to some researchers for experimentation purposes for crying out loud, why is she suddenly mentally and emotionally scarred due to it's death in this game?

and Adam, his character in this game was a completely missed opportunity IMO. in Fusion, Adam was described as a brave soldier or whatever, he stops Samus from blowing up the ship and herself with it, and he seemed like a possible love interest. in Other M, he's a jerk, no other way to put it. he blew up his own brother, and stopped Samus from using her own abillities. Samus and Adam's relationship in this game seemed like a school girl obsessed with her senpai type of relationship, unlike Fusion were it was mutual, mature interest.

overall, the game is decent-good when viewed as a standalone action game, but that's not what it was meant to be viewed as, it was meant to be viewed as a Metroid game, and in that regard it failed to live up the rest of the series, even moreso than Pinball.

I think pretty much everyone agrees:

The gameplay/graphics/visuals in this game are amazing and unlike any game before or after it.

The problem is the story. And yes, Nintendo fans almost by definition favor gameplay over story...

But that doesn't mean we like "bad story." That's actually why we prefer gameplay to story...game makers usually screw up story. It's true. The plots are usually derivative at best and far-fetched impossibilities at worst.

I certainly would be all for a retelling of the Metroid, Zero Mission, Super Metroid games in this graphic/gameplay style. It would in effect create three distinct types of Metroid experiences: 2D, 2.5D, and 3D. No complaints from me there.

Don't like the gameplay. I'd rather it be kind of like Infamous. Half action, half 3rd person shooter.

I personally hated the gameplay. Would have preferred they just kept it side scrolling, instead of trying to mic in the first person aspect as well. Plus, I won't even go into the abomination that is the story.

Xbox One - PS4 - Wii U - PC

Metroid Other M is a good game to convince people to take a creative writing course.

I saw this game for $5. Maybe I should go get it.

It's certainly worth it for $5.

OT: I liked the gameplay, but I have to disagree with you about the authorisation part as that was my main problem with the game (bigger than the story). But yeah, gameplay overall was good and I really liked the last part. I would not say no to a sequel with improved gameplay, a good story and a better equipment upgrade system, especially if Nintendo give the mission to Platinum. Mmm, Platinum Metroid. Now that would be sick!

It's still the only Metroid game I haven't finished, and probably never will.

Yes, this includes the shitfest that is Metroid 2: Return of Samus.

So strongly disagree.

I thought the gameplay was quite strong.
There were a few critiques I had though.
Soundtrack: Metroid should have a soundtrack that is more alien, more foreign, and a little more upbeat. Something like super metroid or prime.
Ambience: Metroid needs to have this isolationist feel. All the good metroid games make you feel almost claustrophobic and alone. I feel like the spaceship design was done due to a lack of power on the wii...so that they were able to re-use textures. I honestly believe that a good metroid should be something hand-drawn. Something really unique to each area that doesn't feel so sterile.
Exploration: There wasn't nearly enough, but the puzzles were rather well done. However, I prefer the metroids where you need to scan every room to find the secrets, rather than just stumble upon them.
Unlocking: I didn't like the unlocking system, because I would get to areas that I should have been able to access until ok, now I'm allowed to use the super bomb. I want to FIND the super bomb, not have it handed to me. I dunno, it sounds like the same thing, but it just felt wrong.
Graphics: Going the realistic route I felt really hurt this game. That gif of what's his name black guy and his helmet literally made me hate him.

In summation, I think metroid should be redone, in a hand-drawn style, similar to that gif of samus and little mac that someone has in their sig. I think it should all be handrawn, darker, and scarier. Metroid should feel more like the end of the movie Alien. Death around every corner, bad bitch big guns, but very much fragile....and most importantly, alone.

I actually really enjoyed this game, probably more than Metroid Prime.

The only thing that bugged me was switching the wii mote to aim for missles.  It always felt awkward to me to keep switching back and forth.
