Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Would You Be Angry If Nintendo Released A New Console But Still Supported Wii U?

Mr. Iwata did say recently that Nintendo actually wants to make *more* hardware, but just share games between the platforms (easier porting).

If Nintendo actually follows through with this, I'm just curious would Nintendo fans be angry if such a scenario unfolded:

- Lets say Nintendo releases a 3TFLOP console in fall 2015 or 2016 that is as powerful as a PS4 + XB1 combined. Regular controller. Really not hard as there already are PC GPUs available today that can pull this off. Aimed at perhaps giving Nintendo a shot at finishing no.2 at the end of this generation ... Sony won't be caught? But Microsoft? That's still doable I think. Nintendo waives third party licensing fees for the first year to get third parties hooked on supporting the system early, and drops their other usual BS with third parties. Basically just a PC GPU for devs, that also has Nintendo games on it, in an ecosystem controlled by Nintendo.

- The same Wii U games however that you were going to get still come on the same schedule. So Zelda U still happens. Yarn Yoshi just happens. This new Nintendo console just gets ports of those games that run maybe at 1080P + full 60 fps or something. Otherwise no difference, the new Nintendo console just has a lot more third party support, but the Wii U was never going to get those games anyway.

Would you be angry at Nintendo for doing something like this or would you understand that they had to make a last-ditch play to retain some kind of marketshare in the console business for the greater good of the company?

Would you be upset if say a game like Mario Galaxy 3 was available on say 3 Nintendo platforms (Next-Gen Portable, New Nintendo Console, and Wii U) day 1 and consumer's could simply buy the game on which ever platform they choose?

I'd be perfectly OK with it. As a bonus, it would be cool if it were backwards compatible with the Wii U as well, for those who would want to play those games without having to buy two systems.

I wouldn't like it at all.

What if such a move secured/saved Nintendo future in the home console business? If they could say beat Microsoft (who honestly looks shaky this gen) would you still be upset? Keep in mind, even as a Wii U owner, nothing really changes with the games you would get.

Not gonna happen. They can barely support 2 consoles let alone 3.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

They should just wait for next generation. The Wii U and GamePad will be easy to manufacture and profit from in the future. This will be another 6th gen for Nintendo with less profits.

In this scenario I think all games would still be made for the Wii U as the base platform. Then Nintendo could simply just scale those games up or down (1080p for a higher end console, 540p for a next gen portable). So the Wii U could still be the "center" platform.

They can't even keep the wii u alive, what makes you think that if they release a new console they will be able to keep it afloat? And if they do this the wii u will just... what comes after dead? Deader? Well anyways both will fail because gamers will be mad that nintendo made a console with better specs after 1 year of releasing the wii u, casing gamers to lose their thrust on nintendo and therefore not buying the new one at all. So yes every wii u owner should be angry but they won't ;)

That's because they try to make distinct versions of every game for different platforms, obviously that formula is not sustainable, even Iwata has admitted they can't keep doing that in the future.

But making 1 version of a 3D Mario and then being able to scale it up or down quickly for different platforms is much more doable, rather than making Mario 3D World for one console, then Mario 3D Land for a handheld, and then Mario Galaxy 3 for a future console ... that would be impossible for Nintendo.

I think based on Mr. Iwata is saying that this is the future that Nintendo envisions for their hardware and it will be a pretty fundamental shift for them.

They essentially did this with the DS, the gameboy advance came out in 2001, and the DS came out in 2004. I don't remember anyone having a problem with that.
