Forums - PC Discussion - Going to build my first ever PC - Suggestions and input welcome

Hi all

I have had a further look around. The i5 4670/Z87/GTX 760 looks fantastic, though I may need to insert some realism with regard to pricing (its all just too pricey in Australia even with some shopping around - that said I might still just decide to splurge lol).

Do people have thoughts on cheaper Intel/Nvidia combos that would still be effective.

EnrageOrange I note your AMD solution - are there serious drawbacks to going that route - could I compromise on some components and upgrade over the coming years or are compatibility issues going to get in my way?

Cheers

For what its worth you might want to be a little careful if you plan to use MSY. They are definitely cheap, but they achieve by spending no money on customer service, they can also be incredibly painful to return faulty stuff too. So as long as you know your consumer rights well and will happily argue for them if you have issues and understand what you are purchasing they are a good cheap option, otherwise I would recommend shopping elsewhere. I have been building computers for 20 years now and sometimes I even decide to pay a small amount more to avoid the frustration of dealing with MSY, depending on where you live in Aus there are other options with almost as good a pricing but infinitely better customer service and efficiency.

In Sydney.  Happy to take your advice if you have preferred providers?

And I am also happy to spend a little extra per component here and there to save hassles!

I would recommend this website http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/ when you are looking for graphics card especially. It has benchmark tests for many components so you can see which graphics card that performs best for the cheapest amount of cash.

The most difficult part for me is to buy RAM. I never buy the big brands that cost the most, I usually search the internet to see user reviews of different RAM and what they have to say about them. And then I buy the one that performs the best for the best price. The big buck RAM are of course a safe way to go, they will perform good and all, but it's not something you really need if you "buy smart". You can most likely find RAM with equal performance for half the price.

Hi all

I PC game on and off, but I have never built my own PC.  In Australia, all parts are more expensive, but purchasing a pre-built system is particularly prohibitive.

I am looking to spend approximately $8-900 Australian on the parts.  This link represents a pretty well known and cheap Aussie supplier, but I am perfectly open to suggestions.

I am certainly checking out Youtube videos on things you need to know about building your own PC, but I would certainly welcome input on:

  • The best parts to fit together in that budget;
  • General suggestions around building your own PC, the sorts of things someone new might not be aware of (construction space, compatibility issues, extra cords I might need, ideal space and power supple - I know NOTHING about motherboards etc); and
  • Any suggestions for where else in Australian I might purchase parts.
My current monitor is 1080p - I don't envision going much higher than that, but if the budget would allow enough power to run a theoretically higher resolution monitor, who knows, I might get one one day!

All input welcome and greatly appreciated.  My goal is to build a computer to use and enjoy, but half of the experience is doing it myself and proving that I can!

Make sure you get a good power supply, a common mistake peeps make.

Not so familiar with the sydney options. Though one I have used there is http://ijk.com.au/branch/ijk/ , they are close to MSY prices for most stuff. Whirlpool.net.au is your friend when it comes to finding good places to purchase in Aus. Some love MSY, many others will give you their horror stories from dealing with them.

Awesome, their Sydney branch is very close to my house.

Everything they have in stock I will save $5-20 on shipping for, which can all go into parts!!!!

Thanks so much!

cool, glad I could help. Have only ever had good experiences with ljk personally in Canberra and Sydney, saving shipping should easily make up more than the small difference in pricing

PM Pemalite, good source for Aussie stuff.
