Pros
+First portable Mario game!
+Storyline is a bit different than the usual Mario game so that is a plus (even if it is a mess of a storyline)
+New characters and enemies appear in this game
+Still has the same formula seen in previous Mario games but with a twist to the gameplay at certain points in the game
+There are some parts in the game that change the genre a bit from platformer to side scrolling shooting.
+"Hard mode" for those who want to brave a higher difficulty setting for a game that already has a high difficulty (imo :P)

Cons
-Visuals are not as good as other games of its time and of previous games.
-Gameplay movement feels slippery at times
-Animation lag exists on the enemy sprites (some of them mostly in later parts of the game)
-Music uncreative as it seems like they used some well known famous tracks from outside sources - also it seems very familiar to Super Mario Bros. 2 (USA)
-Possibly one of the worst aspects is the length as the game can take literally at least 30 minutes to finish (although covered by the extra difficulty to make up for it)

----------------
Comparison's sake to other games in the series.

Super Mario Land 2 was such a huge improvement over this one it's not even funny.

I liked this game a lot! It has some serious flaws and it's one of the weirdest Mario games ever, but it was fun while it lasted!

I agree with the overall score and the complaints about the music, gameplay, graphics and length.

Did you really dock points for story and characters though?

I loved the game and it was possibly the scariest one of the whole serious. The enemy design really gave me the creeps.
To me SMB2 is the worst in the series, so I would rate SML better.

Yes, the enemy designs were freaky indeed XD - especially in the last level I think it was (with the weird chinese background) @__@.
