Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Transfer tool from Wii to U - question on separate files

I am finally transfering content from the Wii to the WiiU (love my save files from ExciteBots, Galaxies and MH3) so my son can keep the old console for him exclusively. But all the virtual console games we have are his (most N64 stuff) and I don't want them to come with the transfer to the WiiU. Do you guys have any idea of what to do? IGN says it is possible to redownload the titles, but does not make clear if it can be done on the U or the original Wii (which would be sweet since we could have copies on both consoles lol). Have any of you ever tried it? Any suggestion is welcome and thanks in advance.

I think that you have to transfer everything. And when you do, the Wii loses all rights to the previous content. I'm pretty sure you can pick and choose going from the a DSi or 3DS to another 3DS but not Wii to Wii U.

Not 100% positive, though.

^^
Thanks. Hope there are more options.

Pretty sure the Wii U can still play N64 games as long as you are in Wii mode.

From my own experience, my Wii never actually lost the rights to play my Virtual Console titles, if I inserted the SD card that I used to store my VC titles into my Wii, it would recognize it and allow me to play them on either console. This was after I had done the Wii to Wii U transfer.

It could just be a fluke on my end, but its worth trying at least.

Awesome, if that's the case.  I'll give it a try!

Bleh, nah it was definitely a fluke. Just tried again and it told me the channels can't be played on the Wii. That sucks :/

Hey, OP--I could google it but I'm lazy. I know that when I did mine, both consoles had to be online and a bunch of Pikmin carried all of my content from the Wii and left it at the Wii U. There's really no boost in performance going to the Wii U that I'm aware of. It even keeps the same 480p resolution.

What I do know is, before the transfer begins, they explain to you what will transfer over and what will not and that the transfer is permanent. Give it a try and if you don't like what you read, just back out before the transfer begins.

Or look it up on youtube.

Is it possible to delete the games from the Wii so that they aren't copied across and then re-download them later?
