So the PS4 wasn't the saviour of console gaming in Japan... how sad .

Yep. Far off from the 100k or more second week some were expecting.

I guess to some of you, everything has failed. Time to stop the doom theme ain't it?

Xbox One, PS4 and Switch (+ Many Retro Consoles)

Prediction: Switch will sell better than Wii U Lifetime Sales by Jan 1st 2018

I was actually expecting worse numbers like around 30-40k. lol!

For a console without any exclusive Japanese games, I guess 60k for the 2nd week isn't bad on a month that is usually down for gaming. (well at least the past few years anyways)

Could be supply issues, or even a lack of software. It's wayy to early to make calls.

No point comparing it to systems that had their 2nd weeks in lead up to christmas.

I think consistent releases will keep the PS4 above 20k in Japan until we get some the games the Japanese really care about. FFXIV, Infamous, Deep Down Beta, Drive Club and Watch dogs will keep it afloat during the summer. I think the roof for Home Consoles really has been lowered in Japan though.

Calm down, it´s only week two. I will remain skeptical about the possible success for ANY console this generation, but judging it by sales for week two is way to premature.

As I mentioned in the other thread, consoles were plentiful the Monday after launch. They were a little harder to find on Friday (2/28), but most stores still had plenty. I am going to do another sweep on Friday to the same stores and we'll see.

Didn't the first week MC numbers say that they sold 87% of the allocation? That would have left 30-50K machines in the channel for week two, excluding any resupplies.

I also want to point out that Christmas is not very important in Japan. It is not even a public holiday. They eat Christmas cake and KFC.

New Year's is a bigger shopping holiday than Christmas here.

Full PR.

Tokyo, March 4, 2014 - Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) today announced that the PlayStation®4 (PS4™) computer entertainment system has cumulatively sold through more than 6.0 million units*1 globally as of March 2, 2014 (JST). This also includes the 370,000 units sold through in Japan since its launch on February 22.

###

*1 Number of retail sales to consumers is estimated by SCEI. PS4 sales data in Japan collected 2/22/2014 –3/2/2014. PS4 sales data in North America, Europe and Latin America collected 11/15/2013 – 3/1/2014, and in Asia collected 11/29/2013 –3/1/2014.

well that destroys my thought that there was some confusion on the date of when that 370k units was sold over.

pretty disappointing week 2 in japan at ~50k.

week 2 japan data:

wii -97k
wiiU - 130k
360 - 10k
ps3 - 130k
ds - 191k
3ds - 208k
psp - 83k
psvita - 74k

VGCz data of course.

60K is pretty bad but without sell through numbers it doesn't mean much.
