Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Did the WIi do long term damage to Nintendo's home console brand?

It was just their overall stupidity that caused them to be where they are right now.

Yes the Wii did harm to the Nintendo brand, however it was a risk worth taking. I think what we're going to see this generation is that the graphics everyone is so hell bent on chasing are going to kill more developers.

The lack of third party games hardly did any damage really. Most people who cared bought both the Wii and a second console. The low cost of the Wii was one of the key selling points of the console. Nintendo might have actually done better to give the Wii U lower level graphics so they could also price it at 250 dollars.

However, now that a new generation has come, everyone has spent the last 6 years hearing "see, I told you not to buy that thing." so now they aren't buying it again. It's more that negative word of mouth has hurt it than anything. Nintendo has the best console this generation but nobody cares anymore.

Nintendo was profiting from Wii at 250 from the get go. They could have easily upped the specs and still profit/broke even. And you know in the long run it would have probably been more profitable. Imagine Wii sales with GTA game last year. It could have rivaled the Ps2 sales

The Wii largely succeeded because it had a killer app with Wii Sports, motion controls, and a strong advertising campaign. I never owned a Wii, but I remember Nintendo having a noticeable presence on my television when the Wii was released. Nintendo kind of abandoned this instead of looking to improve or expand this idea... I don't blame the Wii for Nintendo's current predicament.

Nintendo really has no marketing presence when it comes to the Wii U and that's a huge issue, especially considering the initial confusing as it pertains to the U being different from the Wii. I speculate that Nintendo thought the "Wii" name would sell itself. Sadly consumers and retailers alike didn't know what the U was or how to sell it. I think Nintendo also forgot that it needs to release games for their game system in a timely fashion... It's quite shocking, really.

Obviously, the failure of the Wii U can solely be pegged on horrible foresight and planning on Nintendo's part, not on the percieved damage of the Wii.

Current gaming platforms - Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Wii U, New 3DS, PC

The Wii didn't do anything. Nintendo hurt their console brand by not sticking with the Sony partnership and having cartridges for the N64.

For me personally? Definitely. I was a Nintendo only gamer from NES to Gamecube. With the Wii my Interest in Nintendo sunk dangerously near to zero. I bought the Wii, but I didn't like it all that much and switched to PS3 eventually. Today I only havr a 3DS and only use it every now and then when some gamr comes out. Next-Gen? PS4 since launch, that got me covered.

I have no idea if it had a bad impact in the big picture. But Nintendo lost at least one fan with the Wii and that would be myself. That's all I can tell for certain.

Official member of VGC's Nintendo family, approved by the one and only RolStoppable. I feel honored.

No, it wasn't the wii fault. The problem comes from nintendo. Blaming the wii is just a way from console war army to say the twins beat nintendo SOME way.

Im with you. However, Nintendo lost me with the GC. Instead of buying the Gc i just didnt buy anything. I bought the Wii eventually, played Teilight Princess once and never picked it up again. (My mom took it over for netflix)

basically yes.

missed out on third party games when everybody was getting them cause of weaker hardware

missed out on online play because nintendo didn't care, which was what the 7th gen was all about

graphics were horrid, compared to 360/ps3.

I would say the Wii drove away the hardcore gamers but they lost them a long time ago. The Wii's biggest problem was that there was no foundation to build off of. The online infrastructure was terrible, graphics were still SD, and most 3rd parties avoided the system like the plague. All Sony and Microsoft had to do was make improvements to their current design, Nintendo needed to start fresh with everything.

Nintendo also messed up by not releasing any games on it since 2010. This resulted in the system lacking an active user base. Why do you think the PS4/XBO had such great launches? Because their predecessors had active userbases that were ready for an upgrade. How many people do you honestly think still turn on their Wiis aside from little kids playing Just Dance?

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

It would have been forgotten if they named the wiiU something differently like, oh idk, Nintendo Revolution or something great... Reggie can explain why they picked the time all the way till Nintendo goes bankrupt but it won't change the fact that the name is stupid. When you talk to people and say wiiU, people that never heard of it think you are saying wii and you are mentally challenged so you are putting the U at the end of it but if they even named it the wii2, then people would understand, ohhh, that must be their next console...

Its like Nintendo went in front of a chain-gun and is trying to see how many bullets they can dodge and so far, all the bullets have hit them
