Ultimately, I would also like to add that this is a braindead move from Putin, after all. Invading a country and officially lying about it is not the way to gain any kind of support anywhere. It's disgusting.

Yeah China is not supporting them in this case so do they have any support at all?

i was just asking myself this same question yesterday...

...if putin/russia has anything to gain from this i don't see it. seems risky with too many bad outcomes to me.

Naval Base. Resources.  Worth. For Putin leave Crimea is like US troops leave Japan for US goverment. No ,, shield " againts China/Russia.

Also, so called new Ukrainian goverment is driven by Ukrainian nazi remnants. U dont wanna meet this guys.

Ironically, they have lots of support in Eastern Ukraine. And I do mean LOTS. Nowhere else, though.

Let's not forget Putin is at a net loss with this as he has still lost Ukraine it seems. Personally I suspect this is damage limitation - annexing Crimea or, more likely, reinforcing it as a part of his sphere of influence will be his priority because of the Black Sea fleet and will limit the basic geopolitial impact of the revolution

Also, the show of force created by using the military will act as a sign to other former Soviet republics that Russia remains powerful and influential, which is particularly important given the status of many disputed territories in the caucasus which may otherwise take any sign of weakness as a sign that they may also be allowed independence

It's essentially damage limitation - if he has to lose Ukraine he may as well take Crimea because he does at least have some sort of legitimacy to his claim even if some people would say it's spurious and this way he can keep the Black Sea fleet where it is and show Russia's power to defy the west to it's less tightly controlled neighbours

Interesting, at 04.00 Ukraine army have to surrend or else a attack will follow..

The Ukrain army is trained by the Russians and mostly exist out of pro Russia and people with a Russian heritage, also the weapons and vehicles are bought from Russia and are outdated. Good luck?

Financially this is also very interesting, it is the first time that during a crisis like this one that the Dollar is not succesfull on the market in fact it is falling now...

You don't measure power of a country by it's military inventory. Instead by the willing of it's people.

If Russia gets into a war with Ukraine, it's gonna be another Afghanistan to them or worse. Ukrainians are very patriotic and the streets of Ukraine will be transformed into a graveyard for their army.
