Forums - Nintendo Discussion - The Wii U has worse 3rd party support than the N64 did!

Let me share a couple a couple of numbers I found from playing with numbers here on VGChartz.

  • 42.3% - This is the percentage of N64 games ever sold NOT published by Nintendo. Note that this means that the N64, even with its legendarily poor 3rd party support, still relied on 3rd parties for over 2/5 of game sales.
  • 61.9% - This is the equivalent number of GameCube games. Note that though the GameCube failed in most ways, 3rd parties really flocked to the platform compared to the N64.
  • 56.8% - This is the Wii's 3rd party share. Considering how widely the Wii was bundled with Nintendo games, that's pretty impressive! Even after Wii Sports, Wii Play, Wii Fit, all those Mario games, and everything else, third party games still outsold games developed and/or published by Nintendo.
  • 27.1% - This is the Wii U's 3rd party share.

That's right. Not only did previous Nintendo consoles have better 3rd party support than the Wii U, they had, in the case of the Wii and GameCube, less than half of the games sold out of the total in comparison.

Here's another way of looking at things.

The following is a list of Million-Seller N64 Games from 1996 and 1997.

  • Bomberman 64
  • Mission Impossible
  • NFL Quarterback Club 98
  • Turok 2
  • WCW vs NWO: World Tour

Here's an equivalent GameCube List, covering 2001 and 2002.

  • Resident Evil
  • Resident Evil Zero
  • Sonic Adventure 2 Battle
  • Sonic Mega Collection
  • Spider-Man: The Movie
  • Star Wars Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron 2
  • Super Monkey Ball
  • Super Monkey Ball 2

And last, here's the Wii list, for the years 2006 and 2007. Not counting the Olympic crossover with Sonic, of course. And for jollies, I raised the bar; these all sold at least 2 million.

  • Call of Duty 3
  • Carnival Games
  • Cooking Mama: Cook-Off
  • Dance Dance Revolution: Hottest Party
  • Game Party
  • Guitar Hero 3
  • LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga
  • Resident Evil 4
  • Sonic and the Secret Rings
  • Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz

Now for the Wii U list. And to be fair, let's lower the bar to half a million.

  •  ZombiU

That's it. Every other Wii U game is either Nintendo-published or has sold under 320,000 or so.

Who is to blame for this shocking loss of 3rd party success? Is it developers, for making only the ocassional gimped Wii U port and calling it a day? Is it Nintendo, for making a less powerful machine than preferable and/or including the touchscreen on the controller? Is it gamers, who are unwilling to spend money on games named something like "Hottest Party?"

No matter who we blame, the problem remains clear: less than 6 million 3rd party Wii U games have EVER been sold. Every 3rd party Wii U game ever sold combined has sold less than a couple of the PS3 versions of FIFA.

"But Salnax, you forgot about digital distribution! Wait... this is not a Vita thread? Never mind!"

Love and tolerate.

No one is denying that but can you even blame them? No one is buying third party games on the wiiU... Not even the ones that are decent... Hardly any third party games are selling even close to majority of the Nintendo games vs they are outselling majority of the first party games in the Ps4 and X1. So yea, I can see it

I really wonder how Nintendo is going to handle this situation.. It's not good.

Quick question, is the percentage for N64 GC and Wii lifetime or is it aligned with Wii U's life?

Edit: Read it again, I misinterpreted the whole thing. My bad.

Unnecessary comment but ok.

OT: WiiU owners don't buy 3rd party games. This has been known for a while. It's not exactly a secret.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!
