Many reviewers are young, as in their mid 20s, and did not get to play as young kids games such as Battletoads, Castlevania 1-3 or the NES Ninja Gaiden games.

Tropical Freeze is a throwback to games like those, it is the closest thing we can get nowadays to a high budget difficult 2D platformer.

The difficulty in Tropical Freeze is very polarizing, that is the main issue. There are other issues, they may think 2D platformers are a "lesser" video game genre, "this game is not what the Wii U needed", "this game is not a new Metroid". Another problem is that many of the new platformers are very easy games with a great artistic presentation, you basically play to advance strolling easily through the game to "unlock" the pretty things the developers created, and this game is not like that, you can only advance quickly once you have mastered and memorized a level.

3D World is fun for everyone, Tropical Freeze is only fun for skilled players.

Reviewers rated Wii U's situation. Many said that the console needs a new Metroid instead of DK, but no one said that the Wii U didn't need a 3D Mario.

Another question: Why is NSMBU higher rated than TP? TP is superior in every aspect.

I also think that TP is much better than Rayman Legends. Reviewers praised the innovative Wii U controls of RL, but they gave the same scores to the other versions (I tried the PC version and it sucks in those levels, but my 360 pad is horrible for all 2D platformers). RL is easy and accessible for everyone, but there's almost no challenge at all.

Also, many still haven't got over it not being Metroid Prime 4 or Starfox.

Gamer's should always welcome the challenge. I cant stand easy games anymore, especially Gran Tursimo. They have to do something about their AI and career mode as a whole because i can beat Ferrari 458's in a standard BMW M3 with ease.

Mario is overrated

Donkey Kong Country games are difficult. I'd say that's the main reason why. It definitely deserves to be over a 90 on Metacritic.
