Forums - Gaming Discussion - 1080p & 30 fps vs 720p & 60 fps

1080p & 30 fps or 720p & 60 fps?

1080p with 30 fps 116 50.22%

720p with 60 fps 115 49.78%

Total:231

With the release of the XBox One and PS4 alot has been discussed about the resolution of each platform and game released and the FPS.

Having read the following article regarding issue's on recently released Thief

http://www.craveonline.com/gaming/articles/650465-thief-ps4s-low-framerate-is-proof-that-1080p-isnt-always-the-answer

TLDR: game has poor framerate on both consoles, consistently dropping to 15 fps on PS4 and even mentioned going into single digits, he states he believes the XBox One version to have an edge due to a slightly better performing FPS compared to the PS4 version. Which is likely due to the PS4 running at a higher resolution.

Anyway, it seems at least for the foreseeable future neither console will be capable of out putting 1080p while maintaining a good fps. I wont argue that there isnt a difference between a 1080p and 720p image (I tried that and failed) however I would argue that (at least to me) the difference is small to the eye and when playing a game I cant say I notice a difference (I play on a 42" screen and dont sit too far away). But I do notice is the fps, and would rather play a game at a higher one than lower.

So I just wanted to see how other people felt about this.

Lets say for sake of argument, all games that are released on these consoles the developers have to make a choice, either 1080p or 60 fps, if they cant do both and only do one which is more important to you?

The best way to find out if you can trust somebody is to trust them.

Thief runs at 900p on the X1.

FPS matters more depending on the game though. I'd like to have both in reality. Hopefully they can both get there as the gen gets older.

Depends entirely on the game, Fast paced games like Car games, fighters or shooters you want 60fps, for nearly any other type of game 30fps is fine and a higher IQ is preferable.

Depending on game per game basis. Racing, sports, fighting, 2D platformers (especially the arcade, not puzzle ones), fast paced gameplay shooters I would probably rather have in 60fps. Everything else give me 1080p and stable 30fps and I'm good to go.

Ohh and I would wait for DF analysis over believing some random site, that I doubt have means of directly counting frames.

So it is happening...PS4 preorder.

Greatness Awaits!

many genres work absolutely fine with (constant) 30fps and profit from the higher picture clarity of 1080p, yet for heavily reaction or timing reliant games 60fps definitely is an improvement and should be the main focus in their development

Depends on the game. 30fps with good motion blur goes a long way. A slow/stealth game like thief should be just fine at 30. Ill have to wait for DFs analysis though.

I predict that the Wii U will sell a total of 18 million units in its lifetime.

The NX will be a 900p machine

720p/60fps all the way.
30fps vs 60fps is a much more noticeable and beneficial difference than 720p vs 1080p

is this another thread trying to justify xbone?

First of all Thief on xbone is 900p/30fps and the framerate on both versions drops below 30. The performance might be better on xbone but its not something significant. So the dabate should have been 1080p/15-30fps or 900p/20-30fps on this particular game
