Forums - Gaming Discussion - Online ONLY MultiPlayer Games Are Bad For Gamer's.

I'm mostly a single player gamer. I at times love me some online multiplayer gaming. But for me, the game has to have a solid single player mode. Uncharted, Killzone, Ratchet & Clank and God Of War comes to mind. These are some of my favorite single player games that include a enjoyable multiplayer.

The online gaming community that games on Playstation is huge. I have allot of friends that game all day everyday. GTA, COD, Need For Speed, NBA2K and so on. I recently read that Sony will be (or has already) shut down the servers for popular games like M.A.G / Socom and I think Warhawk.

Among my friends list, M.A.G was a big deal and was released at full retail price. I dont know if Warhawk servers are still active, but I remember gamers going bonkers talking about how solid and fun these game were.

Developers also get tons of added revenue with instalments of DLC for these games, so this adds to the amount of added monies that gamer's are pooring into said game.

Now with the release of Plants vs Zombies:Garden Warfare for the XBoxOne just around the corner, it seems that that game will also be ONLINE ONLY.

Dont know for sure, but I Expect massive amounts of DLC for this game, counting as how EA has shown us in the past. Plus add the fact that its name is some what connected to a mobile game, with mobile micro transactions as its biggest income taker.

What happens when these games servers get shut down ?

How long is long enough for for playform holders to keep these servers open to their game ?

Is it fair ?

I know that most gamer's are aware of their purchase being an online game only, that this may happen some day, but do most gamers know that their game can become a cup holder at any time ?

What are your thoughts on this gamer's........

There such a minority right now i dont think it matters all that much. As it is now the online only games will for the most part carry on being the free to play titles. So as long as you dont invest massive amounts who cares if the server gets turned off.

Would be nice if they included peer to peer or full bot modes for when servers de eventually get turned off.

It's a pity as they hold no value as a collectible. The game may as well be a digital download, as the disc is useless plastic when the servers are shut down.

I saw MAG for $5 at EB a couple of weeks ago. I'd missed that train, but heard good things about the game. Looked it up and the servers had been shut down 3 days prior. Not even worth the $5 now.

Agree with the OP. Good read. I can still replay my old games which is a plus for single player games. I do enjoy multiplayer but I view it sometimes as DRM. No matter what people will say like "Disk based" games "Single player" games will last a longer time that other people think.

I think it's fine. It just depends on the person buying. I mean, people pay $60 for 8 hours of single-player. On the other hand, someone who likes multi-player might get hundreds of hours out of a multi-player only title.

Personally, at $60, I only buy games with high value, where I know I'll get at least a couple of weeks of play time. Multi- or single-player, I don't think it matters.

It's sad to think in 20 years time, people will be reminiscing about games like MAG and Garden warfare, but be unable to play them at all.

But I'll still be pulling out my N64 to relive Pokemon Stadium minigames with friends.

NINJA EDIT: I just realised the futility of wanting to play 8th Gen games in 20 years as there won't be any working consoles left... (well maybe Wii U's)

If a game is online only yet has a single player part then it is DRM, no single player game should have to be played online. For online only FPS like MAG or Titanfall, it's more understandable yet a con as the price of the games should be lower to reflect their limited nature.

Neither of these things are happening though. Online only games are full price and Destiny which has a single player part is online only. Both are DRM in disguise in reality and it sucks.

Hmm, pie.

All I can say is if you dont like a game dont buy it

I'm fine with them since it makes no difference to me if a game I buy for the online multiplayer has also a singleplayer or not. If as example Battlefield has a singlepayer or not doesn't change that i would play only the online multiplayer and that will be much more time as I would ever invest in 95% of singleplayer games so that I get much more playtime with my online games as i do with my singleplayer games even if they shut down the servers after a while.

Sure, it would be great if I could theoretically play an online game even 20 yearsd after release but I don't think that I will ever miss that. I also don't play my old singleplayer games on my old consoles even if I could.

If they make an online only game out of a franchise I love for the singleplayer is something else but that doesn't have anything to do with the servers and more with the fact that I want that game as singleplayer game.
