Forums - Sales Discussion - Console Gaming in Japan not Dead just in a Coma.

When the 7th generation started 3 major things happened that caused the coma for the japanese market.

1 The wii was successful while most developers where centering on HD or hanhelds. If the market would have known (impossible) and put their games on the wii then things would probaly have been different.

2 Sony messed up big time with price and arrogance and the third reason

3 Microsoft striving to get into the market got most of the games that would have sold well on either the wii or ps3 (japanese games RPGs and other well known series). And because the xbox360 didn't do well in Japan these game which should have been the base for a console to be a success in Japan actually didn't sell well. Causing both the wii and the ps3 to flounder without more software and creating a situation no games no console sells no console sell no games.

Now this coma i hope can be come out of if, Sony or Nintendo succeed greatly enough in all the markets. And looking at the wii u performance it seems the ps4 is the only chance.

Lets hope the PS4 is greatly successful or this coma could become death for console gaming in Japan.

I hope so. The more console and PC gamers the better. Welcome back Japan. I've missed you! Buy more single player games, please.

If you look at ps3 software sales barely any made it to a million in sales. 1-2 I believe.

This is interesting, why did the market there become so apathetic towards home consoles right after the PS2?...why was "right after the PS2" the timing when the shift to handhelds started?

They realised probably that it is cheaper to make a game for DS, 3DS, PSP and/or Vita that as many people will buy if not more and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to make.

SquEnix did this with Dragon Quest IX and probably would have done it with FF if they knew what the hell they were doing anymore, sadly they don't..
..
Lack of big JRPG releases didn't help either, only 1 main FF game, no Persona, other JRPGs were released in early gen for the wrong console.

Hmm, pie.

That's one hell of a coma then. You would expect console gaming to die in Japan at some point or another.

A mix of:
1. PS3 price and difficult to program for architecture
2. microsoft limiting Japanse devs' audience by making their game exclusive on 360 that didnt sell.

We'll know in about 2 months.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Well the game market in Japan is showing healthy signs. All the RPGs and other games being announced for the PS4. In the future hopefully it will continue to grow, especially the RPGs

How absurd is that statement? The only multiplat made exclusive to 360 at one time was Tales of Vesperia.

Japanese devs are to blame for their short sightness in business making decisions.

Indie developers can make better business in the West than corporations in Japan. Shovel Knight devs made or will make more money than probably Namco with Tales of.
