Forums - General Discussion - Google Wants To Bring Fiber Internet To 34 More Cities

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Google is planning to offer high-speed Internet service in 34 more cities scattered across eight states in an ambitious expansion aimed at providing formidable competition to cable and telecommunication providers.

The cities on Google's list include: Atlanta; San Jose, Calif.; Phoenix; Portland, Ore. and Salt Lake City.

The blueprint unveiled Wednesday is tentative because Google Inc. needs to work out logistics with government leaders in the communities where it hopes to build the networks needed to deliver its service.

The company promises that people will be able to use its Google Fiber service to surf the Internet at 100 times the speeds of existing broadband services.

Google Fiber currently is available in three cities: Kansas City, Kan.; Kansas City, Mo. and Provo, Utah. It's coming to Austin, Texas this year.

Here is a full list of states and cities where Google plans to introduce Google Fiber:

Arizona - Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe
California - San Jose, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Palo Alto
Georgia - Atlanta, Avondale Estates, Brookhaven, College Park, Decatur, East Point, Hapeville, Sandy Springs, Smyrna
North Carolina - Charlotte, Carrboro, Cary, Chapel Hill, Durham, Garner, Morrisville, Raleigh
Oregon - Portland, Beaverton, Hillsboro, Gresham, Lake Oswego, Tigard
Tennessee - Nashville-Davidson
Texas - San Antonio
Utah - Salt Lake City

I would really like to see Chicago hit that last. I need some better online gaming internet. Comcast is a joke.

I have a question.

Why aren't the behemoths like Miami, New York or Chicago supported yet?

A lot more work. Very tricky and more expensive.

Google is going really slow when it comes to expanding support. Really really slow.

Well, looks like I'm moving to Austin or San Antonio. Hopefully I can find good work there.
