Forums - Sales Discussion - Capcom: the difference in profitability between retail sales and download sales is negligible

If they were talking about net profits for all downloads vs for all physical channel sales, they would have stated "profits", not "profitability".

ah ok thanks for clearing that up but if it's profitability then that could easily be explained by the ridiculous sales that XBL and PSN have. Factoring that in will reduce the profitability of digital sales overall. You'll notice that higher peaks of digital sales occur when there are special offers or huge discounts.

Yeah.. but this can't be recieved good with the retail partners..  Sony/MS/Nintendo will be pushing digital more as they earn more money with it..  while the publisher don't really care.. but retail will not be happy if Sony/MS/Nintendo snatches sales from them..

More to it than that though.  Retailers get the double wallet penetration with none of these being able to be sold on the second hand market (Looking at you Gamestop).

While the publishers do get something extra out of this...no used sales.

True.. Retail is hurting.. but with this could also be the reason why digital is so expensive while we all think it should be cheaper.. Publishers want the same margin they have at retail but when the Digital Store owner charges this much the prices stay high.. truely interessting bit from Capcom to have a glimps at the digital vs retail sales..

Then why the fuck did you make Phoenix Wright: Dual Destinies Digital Only? Go Fuck yourselves Failcom >:(

Why call them Failcom?

You can easily insert an s after the C and get Shitcom.

without sales, i doubt it would have been close.

15 to 25 from a boxed copy that costs 40-60 which might be shared with a publisher.

or

10 to 21 on a title that costs 15-30 digitally. I guess those digital day ones are really profitable at 42 in profit. You can also bypass a publisher in many cases getting more out of the pie. There is also less fuss about getting a product on shelves which costs money itself. Does anyone know what the publisher developer margin would be on PSN,XBL, eShop? I just assume 70/30 split like Android and iOS. If that is the case it really seems like for developers specifically digital is the way to go. Less hassle more porfits lol.

With digital there is the 'benefit' of no used games, but in my experience you can't find used games from good devs so it's kind of a moot point.

I completely agree. Nintendo is whom I was thinking about when I made that statement.

It's so simple, I'm amazed at how many devs don't get it.

This should be known. I mean you remove the middle man with digital sales where do you think that extra profit goes?

Well here is the quote:

Q: What is the difference between the profitability of packaged software and full-game download for each game title?

A: At this time, the difference in earnings for each title is negligible.

I mostly only buy digital unless there is good deal on actual boxed products since it's the easier way to get content and the storage solutions usually load faster. The last game I got from Capcom was RE6 on Steam for like 7 bucks lol.
