I use actual financial reports... weird of me I know.

2006 huge loss $2.0bn

2007 huge loss $1.0bn

2008 huge loss $600m

2009 huge loss $900m

remember these are fiscal years so 2009 is ending in 2010

yes its made some profits recently, but nothing big, last  year for instance it was tiny.

Are those losses for playstation or the company as a whole?  I looked through the link you provided and I couldn't really find anything specific to playstation.  Or is that the Sony Ericson segment in the presentations?

edit: seems to be solely for playstation.  Found it eventually.

i'd probably go lower than that,..  maybe 25/75 with odds being low that MS actually sells xbox.  ..maybe even less.   for all the analyst chatter MS doesn't have to listen to it any more than when sony didn't listen when analysts that wanted them to sell off their movie division.

for MS to sell xbox there needs to be someone willing to buy it at a price worthwhile to MS.   as it stands now, who other than amazon would buy it and would they really offer a worthwhile price? if/when the collapse in gaming happens xbox as a brand will lose a lot of it's value and the likelyhood of a selloff seems would increase, imo.  for the moment complacency (..complacency isn't really the word i want but i can't think of another..) will likely keep the status quo simply because there isn't a huge reason to change.

I was talking about ninty and sony financially imploding...

As for sony, they are doing some of what Loeb said in a slightly different way.  Tv has been sent to die.  Other product lines will follow.

oh gotcha.  my bad.

...and tv needed to be sent off to die or at least entirely refocus.   there is no market for a 156" tv.  if sony (or even samsung) wants to stay in tvs they need to focus on dirt cheap (commodity) priced tvs of reasonable size.   i'm not building a larger home just because the tech companies want to show off how big their dick tv is...

..and thanks for the conversation!  i miss these more interesting conversation VGCz used to have a lot.  pixel counting is boring.

So MS sold so much better than the original X360 and it's a failure? Where did the loss of billions a year come from? I thought they are selling the One at a profit? Seems like a lot of "journalists" are using the PIDOOMA (pulled it directly out of my ass) theory. As for not being the most powerful and not selling as much as the competitors mean you should close shop then Apple should close as well since doesn't Android (mostly Samsung) owns 80% of the market and in some cases have much more powerful devices? How come none of the "journalists" are calling Apple to close shop and selling to Google?

The Xbox 360, as well as the Xbox and Sony's consoles have almost always sold at a loss, and along with Microsoft pumping millions of dollars into developing extra features and special deals with other companies on Xbox Live it's not surprising that the gaming division of Microsoft is hemorrhaging money.  The profit margins are probably better with XB1 sales, but I'm sure they are still losing money with each sale.  The "razorblade model" of selling consoles is part of the reason for this article I'm sure...the companies are hoping they can make money back on the profits of their software sales.

I do agree, however, that it is much too early to call the console a failure.  It is selling well and will probably continue to do so.  The article does point that out anyway, but is saying that the console business is potentially a losing business.

And your Apple argument is a terrible comparison for one main reason: Apple's business is highly profitable.  Apple still has a respectable portion of the mobile market and even if it is losing ground to Android it continues to make a lot of money.  If Apple starts losing money on their mobile endeavors and it is a losing battle, then perhaps selling would be a strategy.  I don't think Apple has too much to worry about just yet.

Let's assume, for a moment, that Microsoft looking to sell off their gaming department, is actually within the realm of possibility. Nintendo is not going to want to buy the "Xbox" brand. They will, however, want many of Microsoft's game IPs. Halo, Fable, and Forza would be very attractive to Nintendo, who are in dire need of an FPS, mature adventure, and racing sim.

No thanks, Nintendo probably doesn't want Xbox as part of Nintendo and Neither do Nintendo fans

Don't speak for me. As long as Nintendo just absorbs Microsoft's gaming division I would be all for this... I love me some Halo.

Hence why probably is there :D

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

If MS ever left gaming it would probably be on HW. If investors want profits, SW would be the perfect venue to make profit.
Would MS become a 2nd party developer for Nintendo? Honestly i think they would develop for both Sony and Nintendo.

uuuhhh good for you? I'm also using official Sony data, but pulled from third party websites.

It's no secret that the PS3 was a loser financially for Sony but even considering that the last 5 years have been pretty good for Playstation and the future looks bright for the brand. The time just before and just after a console launches are usually bad for console makers due to the costs of launching a new product but so far Playstation is showing a profit through 3 quarters this year and the profits will likely carry into the 4th quarter and show for the FY. That's good news for Sony and the Playstation brand should remain profitable for quite some time.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

If it means I get a good Kinect game I'm all for it. But in all honesty I really don't see what Nintendo would really be gaining out of that. Halo I guess but I don't see what good that would do them. With the exception of MK they seem to hate online.

damn, sony killer,
maybe all 3 can get together to take down samsung, apple, amazon and google a peg or 2

i'd defo buy a nintendo/microsoft/sony made tv,phone,PC & console
